Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

A new report is showing that the iPhone has become the most popular camera on Flickr. Of course, this will most likely be due in part to the iPhone now having been around for a few years, but also being available as the original iPhone, iPhone 3G and now the 3GS. Anyway, this information is coming

In a little bit on unsurprising news, the rumor that suggested China Unicom purchased 5 million iPhones has been denied. Of course, judging from the past history of what can now only be described as a never ending saga, this almost seems like it should have been expected. “Talks between us and Apple have been going

Dev-Team Reveals Palm Pre Isn’t The Only One Phoning Home, iPhone Apps Do Too

Monday, August 17th, 2009

As you may or may not know, PreCentral caused a bit of a stir last week when they discovered that the Palm Pre tracks and shares user location information along with other general user information with Palm.  The silly part is that Palm’s EULA wording is vague enough to allow this.  The Dev-Team , however, has decided to warn us iPhone users that we should hold off on poking fun at Pre users, because iPhone apps can phone home too. The Dev-Team explains that code within certain iPhone apps is “specifically designed to track your geographical location through time, then upload that data to Pinch Media.”   Pinch Media offers analytics products for mobile app developers that is intended to provide them with data to help them improve their apps as well as increase revenue. Even though the iPhone asks for your permission to use the data, the Dev-Team still sees this as a problem, because if you decline to allow the app to use your location information, the next time an ad loads it will ask you for it again, and again, and again.  The theory here is that people will get fed-up with this pop-up, so they will simply accept their fate; but once permission is granted to use your location, it never stops.  Each time you load the app, your location is tracked and sent out.  In a later update, the Dev-Team also points out that your gender and birthday may be gathered and sent of as well, as long as it’s available to the app. Of course, to completely avoid the problem you can just remove all Pinch Media ad-fed apps from your iPhone and it will never phone home, effectively allowing you to still poke fun at your Pre friends.  The problem with this method is that we aren’t fixing the problem, just avoiding it. Maybe an app-specific location toggle switch is in order (not just the all-encompassing one)?  Or how about we just boycott apps that utilize Pinch Media’s Analytics?  Or, I suppose we could just suck it up and deal without because it seems to be the norm these days.  What do all of you think? TomTom Car Kit Will Be Compatible With iPod Touch, Third-Party Navigation Apps

Monday, August 17th, 2009

It’s very evident that people want a solid turn-by-turn navigation app for their iPhone.  TomTom’s newly released U.S. and Canada -based app is already within the top 70 paid apps and still climbing.  But what about iPod touch users?  Apparently TomTom hasn’t forgotten about them either, because according to an interview with TomTom PR manager Yann Lafargue via  Mac4Ever [ Google translation ], the unreleased car kit will be compatible with the iPod touch and it will even support third-party apps. “It will work with the iPod touch and will also work with third-party GPS applications.” This basically means that the car kit contains its own GPS that will not only allow the iPod touch to utilize the software, but also replace the iPhone’s own GPS.  It’s worth noting that TomTom’s current apps don’t support the iPod touch at this time, probably to avoid any confusion until the car kit is released. TomTom also has you early navigation app adopters covered with third-party app support for the car kit.  So, if you are unwilling to purchase TomTom’s own navigation apps but want better accuracy, TomTom is still going to be able to grab a few bucks out of your pocket. Lafargue wasn’t able to provide any other information regarding the kit’s price point or release date, but at least we have something else to look forward to. Snood Lands In App Store, Relies Heavily On Facebook

Monday, August 17th, 2009

The Snood s have landed in the App Store and apparently they really like Facebook.  Mid-week last week we were informed that a new version of Snood would be coming to the iPhone and iPod touch , but we really didn’t expect it so soon as EA claimed it would be launching “later this month.”  Apparently that means mid-month, but hey, we’re not complaining. Snood is basically a puzzle game where you will be launching a randomly-selected  Snood into a playing field.  The idea is to launch the  Snood at other  Snood s of the same color to match at least three of the same kind.  If your shot is true, all connecting  Snoods of that color will disappear and any  Snoods left unattached will also drop down and disappear. The iPhone version of Snood features the classic gameplay from the original Mac OS hit title along with the original graphics, but it also contains an enhanced version that features updated graphics and new gameplay modes.  The single player mode includes Story, Classic, Time Attack, and Puzzle modes across varying difficulties.  Multiplayer mode allows you to play head-to-head against a friend, or you can invite them to play later in Challenge Mode.  The only problem here is that Snood relies heavily on Facebook. If you want to play online, share your high scores, and gain achievements, you need a Facebook account.  Now, this isn’t the biggest problem in the world considering many people are currently using Facebook, but sometimes people just don’t want to spam their Facebook friends with irrelevant high scores and achievements, so it would be nice if there was a secondary option. Snood is now available in the App Store for $3.99. Embedded below is a preview trailer for Snood .
