The first-ever census from network equipment manufacturer Meraki shows Apple’s massive growth in the wireless device market. In the past year, the use of Apple devices on the company’s networks has had a 221 percent increase, bolstered by new Wi-Fi devices like the iPod touch and iPhone. While Apple held just 14 percent of the market

E-Mail security bug disclosed, and Apple working on a fix

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

The act of deleting an e-mail within iPhone OS 3.0 isn’t enough to destroy its contents, and Apple is reportedly aware of the flaw and could be working on a fix. Citing a source within Apple, a Gizmodo article stated that the fix will likely come in iPhone OS 3.1 for the iPhone and iPod touch.

Reports: iPods converting to iPhone sales

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

Sales of iPods are expected to continue to recede, with July’s unit sales down by 17% over the previous year. The typical back to school bundling promotion Apple runs, offering free iPods with new Macs, should boost iPod sales over the end of the quarter, bringing quarterly sales to just 5% to 14% less than

iPhone Neck And Neck With Canon’s Rebel XTi As Most Popular Camera On Flickr

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

Convenience apparently trumps quality when it comes to uploading photos to Flickr , because the iPhone is currently neck and neck with Canon’s EOS Digital Rebel XTi as the most popular camera on Flickr. Yesterday Electronista reported that the iPhone had taken the lead as the most popular camera on Flickr, but the current stats show that the two devices are neck and neck once again.  It is presumed the sudden spike in iPhone uploads is due to the launch of the iPhone 3GS, so it is probably only a matter of time before the iPhone takes the lead for good. The stats are a tad misleading, however.  You must not only take into account that most people have their iPhones readily available for photo taking at any given moment along with the ability to easily upload them, but also that Flickr lumps all iPhone models together.  That would be like pooling all of Canon’s Digital Rebel cameras together.  Even after all of this taken into account, it’s still quite a feat. On a related note, the iPhone has been the most popular of the identifiable cameraphones for Flickr uploads for quite some time as indicated by the chart below. iPhone OS 3.0 Email Bug Allows Deleted Messages To Be Retrieved

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

In iPhone OS 3.0, the act of deleting an email doesn’t necessarily mean it is immediately gone forever, it’s actually cached for a while. Matt Janssen created a YouTube video that demonstrates deleted messages can be retrieved via a simple Spotlight search on your iPhone or iPod touch.  Janssen claims he has found emails from three to four months ago using this method.  Don’t believe it?  Try it out for yourself. You can test the flaw by creating an email message with a memorable subject (just so it’s easier to find), and then delete it.  Go to your Trash and remove it from there as well.  Check your mail server (IMAP and POP both work) to ensure you have completely erased it.  Then, go to Spotlight and search for your memorable subject.  Your search results should show the message and in many cases, the entire message itself. The messages do eventually disappear, but there is just no telling when.  There have been reports of simple workarounds, like viewing the deleted message three to four times, but this method would be overly tedious if you want to ensure every single message is completely removed from your device.  According to Gizmodo , Apple is aware of the issue and will hopefully be including a fix in the official release of iPhone OS 3.1. Apple Media Event Scheduled For September 9th, No Tablet

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

All Things Digital has obtained more information about the Apple media event they  initially claimed would be held “the week of September 7th.”  According to sources close to Apple, the event will be held on Wednesday, September 9th in San Francisco and will focus on iPod and iTunes updates.  Their sources insist the event will not involve the rumored tablet in any way, shape, or form. The event will most likely be held at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, where similar events have been held in the past, and will hopefully be the coming out party for the third generation iPod touch and iTunes 9 with all of its rumored social networking features and app management.  There has been speculation that Steve Jobs will be presenting for the first time since his return from medical leave, but their sources couldn’t confirm or deny this. Even though our tablet dreams have been put on hold for another event, there still is a lot to look forward to.  What are you most excited to see at this year’s event? First Look: Facebook 3.0

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

Joe Hewitt, the developer behind the iPhone version of Facebook, just graced my inbox with a copy of the Facebook 3.0 app he submitted to the App Store. It feels more like the full Facebook than ever before and the whole interface is cleaner, snappier and much more bug-free, though there’s still a few things you can’t do with it. Below is the list of features in 3.0 Hewitt shared earlier this summer followed by my initial impressions. 1. The “new” News Feed The news feed now matches what I see on the full Web-based version, so I no longer have to look at all those poor saps I’ve hidden when I browse Facebook for iPhone. Though there’s still no ability to hide/unhide people while inside the app. 2. Like Works just as you would expect it to. Though Facebook as a whole needs to fix the notification system so you don’t receive a bunch of notifications after liking something from people you don’t know. At least make it optional. Hewitt has already said he’s started on version 3.1, which should be focused on Push Notifications. My hope is Push Notifications are implemented in a very robust and customizable way. In other words, users should have the ability to toggle whether a text alert is sent out when someone comments on something I’ve liked. The same is true for wall posts, messages, etc. 3. Events (including the ability to RSVP) Yes, but no access to an event’s wall. 4. Notes Yes, with the ability to edit. Though no ability to tag people in notes, which is arguably a good thing as it ensures some folks won’t be tagging people who aren’t actually in their notes. You know who you are. 5. Pages Yes! You can now see and fully interact with pages. You can also add them to the new home screen, but read on for more on that. 6. Create new photo albums - Yes. 7. Upload photos to any album - Yes. 8. Zoom into photos - Yes. 9. Easier photo tagging - Yes, awesome. 10. Profile Pictures albums - Yes. 11. A new home screen for easy access to all your stuff, search, and notifications This is probably the biggest and coolest addition to Facebook 3.0, though it has one critical flaw in the current release. The home screen features 9 default boxes as seen in the first screenshot above. You can add fan pages and people to additional pages of the home screen. It works very much like the iPhone home screen. Unfortunately, once you add something to these pages you can’t move or delete it. You have to delete and reinstall the whole Facebook app to start with a fresh home screen. You also can’t replace one of those 9 default boxes on the first page with something else. I can see this as being the biggest frustration people will have with Facebook 3.0. I’ve already asked Hewitt about it and he said full editing of the home screen is planned for the 3.1 update. 12. Add your favorite profiles and pages to the home screen - Yes, see above. 13. Better Notifications (they link to the comments so you can reply) - Finally, yes! 14. Quickly call or text people right from the Friends page Yes. More people need to enter contact information into Facebook, but I was surprised by the decent number of friends who already had phone numbers in their profiles. 15. Messages you are typing will be restored if you quit or are interrupted by a phone call - Yes. Other additions of note: Video uploading from an iPhone 3GS. Hewitt said he didn’t plan to include this feature in the 3.0 release but was surprised by how easy it was to implement and, sure enough, video uploads work great. But you still can’t play Facebook videos on iPhone. When you try to play the video you get an alert stating “Facebook Video can not yet be played on this device.” I’m sure it’s in Facebook’s best interests to encode Quicktime versions of their videos the same way Youtube does. According to Insidefacebook , there are nearly 12 million monthly active users of the iPhone Facebook app. That means the iPhone is too big a video platform to ignore. Perhaps this pop-up is just temporary? Please, Facebook, it’s time to get down with the Quicktime. Youtube videos, on the other hand, play perfectly inside the Facebook app. When you’re done watching a video you’re still inside Facebook. Here’s hoping for a quick approval from Apple for Facebook 3.0. We’ll let you know on AppAdvice and on Twitter as soon as it goes live. If the anticipation isn’t already killing you, Hewitt also posted the “What’s New” text as it will appear on the App Store: - See your upcoming Events and RSVP - See your friends’ birthdays - See Pages and post updates and photos to Pages you administer - Write Notes and read your friends’ Notes - Upload videos from an iPhone 3GS - Upload photos to any album - Complete photo management (create albums, delete albums, delete photos, delete photo tags) - Change your Profile Picture - Zoom into photos - Like posts and photos - See the same News Feed as the Facebook website - Visit links in a built-in web browser - See all of your friends’ friends and Pages - See mutual friends - Easily search for people and Pages - Make friend requests - Become a fan of Pages - Quickly call or text your friends - Create shortcuts to your favorite friends and Pages - Friends sorted by first or last name according to your settings - Chat friends sorted alphabeticaly Related Posts Snood Lands In App Store, Relies Heavily On Facebook Facebook v3.0 Finally Submitted For Review Twitter And Facebook Apps, Even More Twitter and Facebook Apps - And Some Other Hidden Gems 8 Great Apps For Your First iPhone [New Applist] Share Your Music On Twitter And Facebook With Face The Music, Free For A Limited Time

Review: Flight Of The Hamsters

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

Overview Launch willing hamsters into the air and see how far you can send them using a multitude of different items as they soar through the sky. A very simple and easy to pick up game, Flight of the Hamsters is sure to amuse and entertain you as you fling these cute little critters across your screen. How far can you get yours? Features As it stands, the game doesn’t really have any other features other than the main game. When you launch a hamster, you can use hamster balls, fans, rockets, and springboards to keep him moving. Get a skateboard and gain some extra ground on the landing too. The Breakdown The Good: This game is just plain silly and a lot of fun. I really liked the music, “Ride of the Valkyries,” that plays throughout the game once you launch a hamster. A very nice touch. The graphics look really good and the sound design fits quite well with the rest of the game. The little hamster animations are also very cool here. They just look so willing to go flying through the air. It’s very funny. The Bad: My only real complaint here would be the lack of features included in the game. I was expecting it to have something, but it really is just the launching game and that’s it. You’ll either like the game or get bored, fast. Not much else to complain about really. The Verdict This game is worth a buck for sure. It’s fun and entertaining and you’ll no doubt laugh at the hamster’s little dance at the end of the game. It can get a little boring after a while as there isn’t much included in the game. A fun game to play on the go, but not a lot of staying power.
