Wooo! You - Posssibly The Most Unproductive Use Of Push Notifications To Date

Friday, July 31st, 2009

Push notifications are great and all, but sometimes the decision to implement the feature into certain apps just leaves me completely baffled.  Now, I understand that some people get a kick out of certain things while others don’t, but this has to be one of the most unproductive uses of push notifications that I have seen. Developer TightApps released Wooo ! Button way back in August 2008.   Wooo ! Button is a simple sound app that literally screams “Wooo!” when you hit the giant button in the middle.  That’s it, that’s all it does.  These types of apps are fairly common in the App Store, but thanks to iPhone OS 3.0 and push notifications, the Wooo ! Button just got a bit more ridiculous. TightApps recently released their new Wooo ! Button companion app, Wooo ! You .   Wooo! You allows you to make another person’s phone scream “Wooo!” via push notifications, but the other user must also have a version of the app installed.  All three of TightApps sound apps are able to receive these push notifications, but only Wooo! You and Booty Gong can do the pushing. Both Wooo! You and Booty Gong are priced at $.99, while Wooo! Button is available for free. So, if you are looking for a way to annoy your friends or family members remotely, you may just want to check out Wooo! You .  I personally don’t see the appeal, but don’t let that stop you from enjoying yourself.  To each their own. I know the concept isn’t that difficult to grasp, but I have included the demonstration video below just in case. Have any of you discovered other apps that use push notifications in ridiculous ways? So Many Games On Sale That We Can’t Even Fit Them In This Title

Friday, July 31st, 2009

Normally when we do sale posts, we like to make sure you know what you are getting yourself  into just by reading the title.  Well, that just isn’t going to happen today since there are tons of great games on sale and they simply would not fit into the title.  It’s not a bad thing, however, it just requires a little more reading on your part. Tiger Woods PGA Tour - In honor of the Buick Open, EA has placed Tiger Woods PGA Tour on sale for a limited time.  The game is regularly priced at $9.99, but it is now available for $4.99. F.A.S.T. - Fleet Air Superiority Training! - SGN’s amazingly addictive flight combat game allows you to play against AI opponents or against other pilots from around the world via Wi-Fi.  The game was originally launched at $9.99, but it has now officially hit the lowest possible price of $.99. UniWar - This is another great online game.   UniWar features tons of great content, and it is one of the best turn-based strategy games available in the App Store.  It has fluctuated in price ever since it was launched in the App Store, with it’s highest price being $4.99, but you can pick it up today for only $1.99. HydroTilt XL - A ball rolling physics-based puzzle game that allows you to create your own levels and upload them to a server, or you can download other players’ creations for nearly unlimited replayability.  The game was originally available for $4.99, but it is now available for $.99. iDodge: Space Ninja - A fairly challenging accelerometer-based space shooter where you don’t shoot at all but you can utilize power-ups and a time-slowdown mechanic.   iDodge: Space Ninja originally launched at the price of $3.99 way back in January, but it is available for free for “less than a day.”  Get it immediately. Moto X Mayhem - This one only launched a few days ago, but it sports some very solid accelerometer-based controls and goofy ragdoll physics.  Simply complete the tracks in the fastest time possible.  Early user reviews have stated that although the game is solid, it lacks content.  It is fairly new, so there shouldn’t be any doubt the developer will release new content through updates.  It launched at the price of $1.99, but is available for $.99. That should be enough to get you through the weekend.  Feel free to leave a comment below recommending any other games that are on sale that you believe are worthy.  Enjoy! Apple To Release iPhone SMS Bug Fix On Saturday?

Friday, July 31st, 2009

Only a day after two cybersecurity experts revealed a SMS bug in the iPhone that may allow the device to be hijacked, the BBC is reporting that Apple will be issuing a fix for it as early as Saturday via iTunes. The news came from an O2 spokesperson, an iPhone wireless carrier in the U.K. An O2 spokesperson said the patch would be available Saturday through iTunes.  ”We will be communicating to customers both through the website and proactively,” the spokesperson added.  ”We always recommend our customers update their iPhone with the latest software and this is no different.” The bug doesn’t only affect iPhones, however, it’s just that the media has focused on Apple’s device more than others.  Google’s Android is susceptible and so are Windows Mobile phones.  Apparently Google has already taken steps to fix the exploit. As revealed by cybersecurity experts Charlier Miller and Collin Mulliner, the problem is in the way the iPhone handles SMS data.  Hackers may be able to remotely control your device without you even knowing by sending a series of text messages, and the only way to be absolutely certain you are safe is to shut your device off. Both Miller and Mulliner had warned Apple about the bug about a month ago, but as always with Apple, they failed to respond.  The duo decided to reveal the bug at this year’s Black Hat conference in Las Vegas in hopes that the information would help speed up the patching process and help bring more attention to the possibility of other SMS hacks. Saturday is only a day away. Nintendo Warns Of Profit Decline, Blames iPhone

Friday, July 31st, 2009

Oh how the mighty have fallen!  Well, not really, but at least Nintendo is finally recognizing Apple’s unique mobile platform as “the competition,” going as far as blaming some of their slowing sales on the ever increasing pressure from the iPhone. Nintendo has been able to weather the economic downturn better than any other gaming console manufacturer out there thanks to the strong sales of the Wii and DS.  But just yesterday, Nintendo warned that they won’t be able to keep up their amazing sales numbers thanks to slowing Wii sales and increased competition from Apple’s iPhone.  That’s not the only bad news for the gaming giant, however, as one  The Secret of Monkey Island developer has stated that the iPhone is actually more powerful than the Wii.  Way to kick them while they are down guys. “Frame rate issues will probably get sorted out eventually, but keep in mind that the Wii is just not a powerful console. An iPhone is much more powerful than a Wii, even.” So what does this mean for Apple?  Well, let’s just call it another feather in their cap.  Even though Nintendo has recognized Apple as the competition, and apparently so have some developers, many people still feel that the iPhone is merely just a phone with the ability to play games and not a true gaming machine.  It’s obvious that Nintendo isn’t going anywhere, they are still the king of mobile gaming, but this is the very first time that Nintendo has actually recognized the iPhone as competition, and the best part is they didn’t even mention their actual direct competitor, Sony’s PSP, so we will take what we can get. Have any of you replaced your Wii, DS, or DSi with an Apple gaming device recently? Apple releases new support article blaming jailbreakers for “instability, disruption of services, and other issues”

Friday, July 31st, 2009

According to a recently published Apple Support article, jailbreaking is the cause of lots of problems on the iPhone. The summary of the article sums it up pretty well; “This article is about adverse issues experienced by customers who have made unauthorized modifications to the iPhone OS (this hacking process is often called ”jailbreaking”). Issues that have been encountered include instability, disruption of services,

AT&T issues statement, blames Apple for banning of Google Voice apps

Friday, July 31st, 2009

For better or worse, it seems that those much loved Google Voice apps are going to remain out of the App Store and now the discussion of who is truly to blame seems to be continuing. Personally, this felt like more of an Apple move as opposed to AT&T, but many have been blaming AT&T
