Dev-Team Delays iPhone 3GS Jailbreak

Monday, June 29th, 2009

It looks like iPhone 3GS owners are going to have to wait a little longer than initially expected for a jailbreak.  The iPhone Dev-Team has announced that even though the 3GS jailbreak is ready to go, they aren’t going to be making it available to the public at this point. The long and short of it is that the Dev-Team is still playing their cat and mouse game with Apple and they really, really don’t want to lose.  They feel that if they make the 3GS jailbreak available to the public right now, Apple will fix the “bug” for all future devices sold. “The jailbreak requires at least one signed iBoot-family img3 for your device. And that iBoot needs to have an exploitable bug. It’s an all-or-nothing deal…you either have your signed exploitable iBoot ready to use, for now and forever — always jailbreakable — or you have nothing. Here’s the critical point, the reason why we’re delaying our version of the jailbreak: Once the jailbreak is out, Apple will fix the iBoot-family bug we use to accomplish it. They will simply stop signing the old iBoots and only sign the fixed ones. If you bought your phone after Apple has done this, there’s nothing you can do…the jailbreak isn’t going to work for you.” Basically, the team doesn’t want to reveal the bug to Apple.  They do understand, however, that Apple may find the bug without them revealing it, but they feel it is better to be safe than sorry. The Dev-Team also believes that Apple will be releasing a 3.0.1 firmware very shortly, so they are just going to wait and see what that brings before figuring out a new release date for the jailbreak.  In the meantime, they are working on fixing some remaining iPhone OS 3.0 jailbreak issues, including push notifications. The Dev-Team is looking out for the best interests of current and future 3GS owners, and you can’t fault them for that. Warpack Grunts Marches Into App Store

Monday, June 29th, 2009

The squad-based arcade shooter Warpack Grunts made its way into the App Store late last night.  The game borrows heavily from the Amiga classic Cannon Fodder , but it should appeal to almost any fan of simple arcade shooters. Warpack Grunts is a top-down squad-based shooter where you are able to control a squad of grunts who are armed to the teeth with weapons like M-16s, sniper rifles, grenades, and more.  You will also be able to command powerful tanks and helicopters in your quest to defeat the “Evil Dude.” To control your squad, touch a spot on the map and your units will follow.  To shoot, double-tap on an enemy target.  Your squad of grunts and vehicles are both controlled in this same simple manner. The game features 40 levels, four levels of difficulty, online leader boards, and a special unlockable survival mode to add to the longevity of the game. Warpack Grunts is now available in the App Store for $.99. Review: Let’s Golf

Monday, June 29th, 2009

Overview Let’s Golf is an arcade style golf game for easy pick up and play and is similar to Hot Shots Golf, or even Mario golf. Everything in the game is cartoonish in comparison to the more serious Tiger Woods for the iPhone. This game is made to appeal to everyone rather than simply golf enthusiasts. Included is a 3D golfing experience to see the deluxe landscapes of the respective courses. The game is made for quick pick up and play with super easy controls, and a relatively quick pace. Let’s Golf implements golfing on the iPhone nearly flawlessly. The style makes Let’s Golf appealing, and the fun factor is outstanding. Features There are quite a few features beginning with four courses to play, and four characters to play with. You begin with Fiji, and England and as you win tournaments you unlock the USA and Scotland. There are tons of unlockables with two of the four characters, medium and hard difficulties, and new clothes and golf balls. Included are four modes of gameplay: instant play, free hole, multiplayer, and tournament. Instant play is a quick way to play three random holes from any of the four courses. Free hole lets you pick any of the four courses, and play the front or back nine. Multiplayer is simply playing someone else on any course of your choice over wifi, or passing the iPhone back and forth. Tournament is where most of the game is, providing four tournaments to play for each of the four courses. You compete against computer players on the front and back nine, all 18 holes, and a nine hole shuffle. Once you finish first in all four, you unlock the next course, and the next difficulty for the course you just completed. Also included are two types of controls: basic and advanced. In basic mode you tap the green button to start the meter, then you tap again to lock in power, and then tap a third time to lock in accuracy. Once you’re ball is in flight, there is a ball in the lower left that you flick to change the spin on the ball. There is also an advanced mode that is more like a golf simulation compared to the arcade style. The Good The best aspect of this game is that it’s the most fun golf game in the app store. Learning the controls takes a couple tries, and then you’ll be blasting the ball all over the course. The game speed is super quick for golf, and that’s what really keeps you hooked. You’re ready for each shot right after the ball lands from the previous. Also included is a save system that picks up on your exact swing on whatever hole you were on when exited. The visuals are definitely great to look at, and a must for a golf game. The 3D courses are beautifully designed with each course having intricate details distinguishing each one. You’re able to see the entire hole from many different angels. When you first come to a hole there is a fly over from tee to pin and then once you hit you’re ball the camera follows the entire flight. The animations are great as well beginning when you hit the ball there is an orange or blue flurry around your player. Also while you’re ball is in flight there is a white trail to be able to follow it easily and track the trajectory to decide if you want to put spin on it. Overall the graphics show beautifully designed courses that by themselves give reason to pick up this game. Each course has a different enjoyable upbeat soundtrack with a little variation on each hole. There are a few comments like great shot, or chance for a birdie, as well as a jingle when you make a birdie or better. On your drives they sound like massive blasts with the sound effects provided. The controls really make this a fun experience anyone can enjoy. They’re super simple and help speed up the pace, so it seems like you’re always determining your shot or actually shooting rather than waiting on loading or a convoluted interface. To look at where your shot will land you just tap the map in the upper right which helps for pin point accuracy for set-ups and chip-ins. The Bad One problem is that there are only 4 courses, and after you finish 1st place on all four courses 1-18 there isn’t much incentive to play more. I would definitely like to see more beautifully designed courses, and more holes to test my skill on. Replayability can be a potential problem, but having a golf game to play anytime anywhere in short bursts will always be nice to have. The game is a little shallow for a golf enthusiast, but I think the fun should make up for that. The tournaments could be a little more involved, as you only play against a few computer players rather than a huge leaderboard. Also it would be a little better if you actually got a trophy rather than just being on a 1st place pedestal. The Verdict Let’s Golf provides more fun than any golf game in the app store. It’s relatively fast paced for golf, and the controls make it accessible to anyone. The courses are a joy to play with all of the beautiful intricacies from the different locations. The controls allow you to actually do well, sinking multiple birdies and the occasional eagle always adds enjoyment. Let’s golf is a great game, but isn’t ground breaking, or an iPhone game standout. It’s definitely fun, and appeals to a bunch of people. If you’re looking for a fun sports sim, Let’s Golf should be your go to game. New iPhone AIM version supports push notifications

Sunday, June 28th, 2009

When we toured iPhone 3.0’s best features, we mentioned we hadn’t yet seen many applications that supported push notifications. Now one of the big ones—AIM—does, delivering instant background messages even when it’s not running. As a refresher, Apple doesn’t allow the iPhone to run background applications. As a workaround, the new iPhone 3.0 supports push notifications

WordFu And Dr. Awesome On Sale To Celebrate Release Of Rolando 2

Sunday, June 28th, 2009

Rolando 2 will be rolling into the App Store on July 1, and to celebrate the release of this highly anticipated platformer, ngmoco is having a $.99 sale on both WordFu and Dr. Awesome .  That’s a ton of good news in one sentence. Rolando 2: Quest for the Golden Orchid will feature dozens of new levels, four unique worlds, physics-based puzzles, and a whole bunch of new enemies along with a new 2.5D look that will really set it apart from the original Rolando . There is some bad news to go along with all of this good news, however.  According to TouchArcade , ngmoco has stated that they will be “making room” for Rolando 2 by removing the original Rolando and Rolando Lite from the App Store on July 1.  ngmoco hasn’t stated the reason for doing this, but apparently this isn’t the first time they have done such a thing.  The original Topple is also gone from the App Store, which was probably ngmoco’s way of “making room” for Topple 2 . We are unaware if all of these removals will be temporary or if they are permanent, but we will just assume the latter at this point.  We will inform all of you if and when we find out more about this sudden removal.
