Review: Castle Conflict

Monday, May 25th, 2009

Overview: You are his Highness, the King of (your name here)sville and your kingdom is under attack! In Castle Conflict, defend your castle from evil forces while trying to destroy the opposing castle. Features: In this Warcraftesque tower defense game, you must collect points by gathering resources - trees in this case. Send out your peons to gather the wood. More trees equals more points. The more points you obtain, the more options for destruction you are offered. Weapons range from little guys with swords to knights on horseback to blimps who drop bombs on the battlefield. The more they cost, the more damage they will do. The Good: The ability to use ninjas to steal resources from the opposing peons, and the castle itself, is the best thing about this game. The ninjas cost a little bit more than your run of the mill peon, but they are faster. If you see an enemy gatherer who is closer to a tree than you are, send out a ninja to steal it from him. But, remember, timing is everything and watch out for enemies who are bigger than you are as they will crush you into a poof of gray smoke! The Bad: This game is actually fairly entertaining, however there are some major issues. First and foremost, there is only one level. You gather resources and hit their castle with everything you’ve got. Once it’s destroyed, that’s it. You are given stats for that particular game and taken back to the main menu. No level two - that’s it. I found this odd considering the “Continue” button located on that very menu. Don’t tease me with a button if there is nothing to continue! …and yes, I used the same picture twice. I can do that if I want to. The graphics are pretty basic, but that’s not really too big of a concern with this type of game. The difficulty, however, is something we should talk about. There are three modes: Easy, Medium, and Hard. I have played on the hard level every time and have yet to lose. I may just be that good, but I think it’s also due to the fact that the devs just didn’t make it difficult enough. Now, let’s add the “Help Menu” to this list. I don’t even have to explain it, just look at the picture right here. Really? “Defeat the enemy!” is all the help that you have to offer? Thanks, I wasn’t sure what to do until I read that. The Verdict: Y’know, this game, like I said before, is fairly entertaining. If they were to remedy the afore mentioned issues and give us more levels, then it would be pretty fun. Maybe you fight two castles at once? I don’t know, just something. Anything! Also, $1.99 is a little high for me considering what I mentioned above, but it is a good time waster and there is some entertainment in it - so it’s not all bad. First Gameplay Video For The Sims 3

Sunday, May 24th, 2009

With the release date for The Sims 3 just around the corner, it’s nice to finally see some actual gameplay footage.  EA Mobile has given us tons of screenshots and even a preview trailer for the game, but nothing that has shown us how the game really looks and plays on the iPhone.  That is, until today. IntoMobile managed to get some hands-on time with the much anticipated title and from the looks of things, The Sims 3 will be everything you have been hoping for. IntoMobile demoed the game on a first generation iPod touch, so if you are an owner of an older Apple device this video should help put some of your performance fears to rest. The Sims 3 looks fantastic, at least graphically speaking, and according to IntoMobile, the user interface is perfectly optimized for the iPhone’s unique controls. The Sims 3 will be available in the App Store on June 2nd.  EA Mobile stated that the final weeks will be spent tweaking the gameplay and adjusting the in-game soundtrack. Embedded below is your first in-depth look at The Sims 3 . Low Latency Drum Pad ‘Bare Drums’ Now Available, $500 Contest For Best Jam

Sunday, May 24th, 2009

The App Store contains oodles of drum applications and I honestly couldn’t tell you the difference between most of them.  What I can tell you, at least based on a YouTube video performance, is that Ethervision’s Bare Drums looks like a fantastic application for any of you out there with real drum skills. Bare Drums ‘ big selling point is Ethervision’s claim that the application has the lowest latency of any drum application currently available in the App Store.  They state that other drum applications hover around 100ms latency, while Bare Drums cuts that number almost in half.  Since we can’t actually prove this you will just have to take their word for it, at least until you try it out for yourself. Bare Drums isn’t just about latency either, the application allows you to reconfigure the layout any way you want.  You are able to create different size pads, assign sounds to any pad, adjust the volume of any pad, change the color of any pad, and it even supports clamping, where one pad can be clamped to another to silence it when the other plays. To further assist you in making a purchasing decision, at least for those of you out there with some musical talent, Ethervision is holding a $500 contest for the best drum jam, and we have listed all of the contest details below for anyone who is interested.  We have also included a YouTube video below created by Ethervision which showcases one wicked drum solo.  If you think you can top it, you may actually have a chance at winning the $500. Bare Drums is available in the App Store for $.99. Contest Details: Post your video to youtube and e-mail the link to baredrums@ethervision.net. Winner chosen by Ethervision based on best jam and most creative use of the app. For best results plug iphone into an amp using 1/8″ to 1/4″ jack then record with vid camera for best results. Winner will be chosen exactly 40 days after the app is released on the iTunes store. No Gimmicks, just $500 for the best jam. Period. Note: When you upload to youtube add the keywords: “bare drums iphone application” please. 3.0 Firmware to give much needed feature bump to Maps

Sunday, May 24th, 2009

So far, there are no changes to the Maps application for the iPhone. There are some other features that include maps that are new to the 3.0 Firmware though. First, developers can now integrate Google Maps into their application. This is part of the new developer APIs in the 3.0 Software Developer Kit. This should

Are You Ready For The Ultimate Pinball Experience On Your iPhone?

Sunday, May 24th, 2009

Developer Matmi has been creating unique games for years, but they have never created one for the iPhone, that is until now.  Matmi has given us a little sneak peek of their new, yet-to-be-released pinball game for the iPhone and iPod touch, and judging from the gameplay video, it looks like they have this whole iPhone game development thing figured out. Monster Pinball is a smooth and action packed pinball game.   Monster Pinball contains everything you would expect from a pinball game, including multiple flippers, rebounds, stallballs, boosts, bonuses, freeballs, and an accelerometer-based tilt.  The game also features some unique graphics and sounds, local and online leaderboards, and some really unique monster characters. What is really going to set this one part from the rest is the fact that the game runs at 60 frames per second, creating an extremely smooth gaming experience, and it also features 6 unique pinball tables that are all interconnected. Matmi hasn’t released any other information regarding the title as of yet, including its price or release date, but we do have a silky smooth gameplay trailer for you. Embedded below is a gameplay trailer for Monster Pinball , give it a watch and tell us what you think. Why Jailbreak: Stack and Categories

Sunday, May 24th, 2009

Before jailbreaking, I had 9 home screens full of applications. 9 home screens! I am sure that you know just how confusing and crazy that many home screens can be. But, thankfully, jailbreaking has solved yet another problem. Not only has jailbreaking made my phone more customized, accessible, and easy-to-use, but it has also made my phone more organized. There are two main utilities that I have used to reduce 9 home screens to a mere 2. Using only Stack and Categories (and a few smaller, subsequent apps that enable these to work) I was able to shrink 9 home screens down to less than one-third the size without deleting a single app. The key to this entire organizational scheme is the utility Categories. It simply ‘puts your applications into folders’. It is a little bit slow, but it gets the job done. It allows you to name your folders, easily add and remove apps from the folders, and select one of many icons to represent your folders. I have created folders through Categories specifically for my music apps, games, utilities, toys, and miscellaneous apps. Above, you can see my ‘Games’ folder, which contains multiple screens which you access through the familiar swipe method. I haven’t put all of my apps into these folders; I have left my most-used apps on the home screen so they they are more accessible. The nicest thing about using Categories, is that now you aren’t restricted to only 9 home screens of apps! If you are like me and love to load your phone up with all kinds of applications, I recommend getting categories so that you aren’t restricted to Apple’s limit of 9 home screens. This is the main utility used to shrink 9 home screens down to 2, but there are other utilities that help out as well. Stack is a very handy utility which adds a special icon to the middle of your dock, as you can see in the above image. When clicking on this icon, it extends out to reveal 5 apps that are “stacked” on top of it. Indicated in the screenshot below, I have put all of my folders from Categories into Stack, but Stack will take whatever icons you add to it. In fact, it can take over 5, but then it extends from just a transparent strip to taking up the entire screen. Now, in order to use Stack, I had to make my dock a 5 icon dock and add a blank icon in the center of my dock. Also, it is necessary to go into BossPrefs and turn off the icons that you put ito Stack, unless you like duplicate icons for some strange reason. As you can see, Stack and Categories have both immensely increased the amount of organization on my iPhone. By simply placing my less-used apps into folders and brushing those folders away into a collapsible “stack”, I was able to turn 9 home screens into 2, with my most frequently used apps still readily available. Get all of these required tools by adding the ModMyi, Saurik, and BossPref sources to Cydia. Doodle Jump Update Unleashes The Pygmy

Saturday, May 23rd, 2009

Doodle Jump is a ridiculously addicting platform jumping game for the iPhone and iPod touch.  The game has received a series of updates since its launch that added new monsters, new gameplay elements, and Facebook connectivity, but none of those updates were nearly as intriguing as their latest update. Lima Sky has recently issued a 1.2.1 update for Doodle Jump that adds the ability to be a pygmy, but this isn’t just any old pygmy, this is a very special Pocket God pygmy.  In Doodle Jump ’s description, the “What’s New In This Version” section simply reads: A secret “easter egg” in collaboration with Pocket God (set your name to one of the default Pocket God pygmy names and see what happens!) Lima Sky has partnered with Pocket God creators Bolt Creative to pygmy-ify Doodle Jump .  Simply enter a default Pocket God pygmy name just as the description suggests (like “Ooga”) and your character will turn into a Pocket God pygmy that is able to throw coconuts. Doodle Jump is available in the App Store for only $.99.  If you are a fan of Pocket God , the added pygmy character may be just enough reason to give this one a try.  Don’t forget, Pocket God is also still available for only $.99 in the App Store. Another 32GB iPhone Placeholder And Possible AT&T Shortage

Saturday, May 23rd, 2009

As the World Wide Developers Conference swiftly approaches, everyone seems to be getting more and more excited for the next generation iPhone launch and apparently it’s not only the Apple fanboys who can’t contain their excitement. Yesterday we detailed how T-Mobile Austria decided to put a placeholder on their website for the not-yet-released 32GB iPhone, and today we have even more cases of carriers jumping the gun. The first case comes from a BlackBerry Bold trade-up program run on behalf of AT&T.  The website allows you to trade in your old phone towards the purchase of a new RIM smartphone.  The slip-up is within one of the drop down menus where you must choose the product you are trading in.  When you select “Apple” as the manufacturer, you are then able to select “iPhone 32GB 3G” as your trade-in product. Our second case comes from The Boy Genius Report , where the Canadian carrier Rogers has given a few new details regarding their next-gen iPhone launch.  According to one of their sources, Rogers intends to launch the new iPhone sometime in July/August.  They also report that Rogers intends to launch the new iPhone the same day that it is launched in the US, and purchases will be limited to one iPhone per customer on opening day along with a few active demo units on display in stores. Finally, AppleInsider has reported that one customer called AT&T to get his wife’s iPhone replaced and the representative informed him that they no longer sell new iPhone 3Gs, they only currently have refurbished ones in stock.  When the customer asked why there weren’t any available, the representative simply stated that they could not disclose that information and the representative also added that they don’t expect any additional stock.  Within hours after reporting this isolated incident, AT&T spokesman Brad Mays denied any shortage claims and stated that this specific sales representative provided “incorrect information,” but didn’t elaborate any further. We now have a fairly vast amount of information regarding the next generation iPhone, and from the looks of things, it is going to be a very exciting launch.  If we are to infer anything from all of this new information, however, it’s that we will be seeing a 32GB iPhone 3G sometime in July/August.
