Tired Of Being A Mobster? Become A Rockstar Instead!

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009

If you are tired of being the ultimate mobster in games like iMob , Mafia Wars , and Mafia: Respect and Retaliation , but you enjoy the concept of those games, you might want to check out Storm8’s new online game,  Rockstars Live . Rockstars Live is just like all of those mafia-based online games, but instead of becoming the ultimate mobster, you must construct the best rock band in the world and become the ultimate rock star. In Rockstars Live you must first create your band and immediately start practicing.  You gain reward points by competing against other bands and performing in shows.  Just like in the mafia-based games, you can use your reward points to level up your band, and you can spend the massive amounts of cash you have earned on new guitars, amps, and percussion instruments which add to your band’s rock prowess.  To become even more world renowned, you can also invite your friends to join your band. Just like the mafia-based online games, Rockstars Live is offered at various price points which contain a different amount of reward points.  The $19.99 version starts your band off with 300 reward points , the $9.99 version with 140 points , and the $4.99 version with 60 points .   Rockstars Live is also available for free without any extra reward points, but that version is only available until tomorrow, May 27th. If you are interested in Rockstars Live at all, you should definitely pick up the free version in the App Store while you still can! Review: Health Tracker for Women

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009

OVERVIEW It used to be that the most effective devices a woman had for recording various health issues was a calendar and a pen. However as technology has improved, women now have various gadgets and applications to not only track her cycles but also predict when her next cycle will be. Health Tracker for Women takes this tracking concept and attempts to expand on that, including more health related predictions based on a woman’s menstrual cycle. FEATURES Menstrual & Fertility Forecasting Upon initialization, the Health Tracker for Women asks the user to input information about her periods, similiar to what you would expect at the doctor’s office: When was your last period? How long do your cycles last? How regular are they? There are also some other questions including birthday, height/weight and blood type. Skin, Sex Drive, Weight Loss Forecasting Based on your menstrual cycle, the Health Tracker will also predict various health conditions as well as give tips on how to cope. This includes “Skin Beauty) or skin condition (dry, oily, etc.); “Diet Effect” or the predicted effectiveness diet and exercise will have; and “Sexual Allure” or libido. BREAKDOWN The Good The Health Tracker offers several things that similar apps do not offer, such as forecasting skin condition, sex drive and how effective weight loss methods will be during certain points of a woman’s cycle. Based on the entered menstrual cycle information, it shows graphs for things like basal body temperature. The Bad Health Tracker offers menstrual and fertility forecasting not tracking as the app name would imply. There is no inputting or updating information past the original information in the settings. The settings function does allow you to specify if you are irregular but does not allow you to input any information to compensate for that irregularity. The limited tracking aspect of this app, along with the inability to account for other variables in a woman’s cycle make the cycle prediction questionable. While being able to predict when and how long a cycle will start, not being able to track and update that information makes the forecasting useless to a woman whose cycle is even the slightest bit irregular. The fact that all the other forecasting features are dependent on a singular point seems to be flawed. For instance, it is nice to have a skin care predictor but every woman’s skin is different. The same part of one woman’s cycle that leaves her prone to breakouts may be another woman’s “good” skin day. It just doesn’t work. COMPARISON Unfortunately, the Health Tracker for Women does not even begin to compete with other similar apps. Other tracking apps such as iPeriod and Monthlies, also predict when a a woman’s next period is due. But unlike Health Tracker which uses a single date and basic information regarding length, the competition uses calendars where a woman can input what day her period starts and ends, with extended functionality including symptoms, notes, personalization, etc. VERDICT The idea behind Health Tracker for Women would be a great idea had it been a full featured trackers as the name would imply. Unfortunately, this app is merely a simple menstrual calculator, dressed up to include interesting looking features that fall flat in performance. With plenty of other women’s health related apps which actually do allow a woman to track, rather than just record the first day of her cycle, I cannot justify buying this app. Related Posts Review: iFitness

FDG’s Kryzer Prologue Now Available And It’s Just The Beginning

Monday, May 25th, 2009

FDG’s new game, Kryzer Prologue , marks the beginning of a “new stunning gaming experience for the iPhone and iPod touch,” just as the name suggests. Kryzer Prologue puts you in control of a ship that speeds around a 360 degree playing field in an attempt to get the highest score possible before the time runs out.  In Kryzer Prologue you simply control the ships movement from rail to rail as the ship keeps spinning faster and faster in a circle.  You must shoot and avoid enemies as you spin, but if you collide with an enemy, you will lose 30 seconds off the timer.  The game also contains an online leader board for you to compare your scores with the rest of the world.  It is a simple pick-up-and-play game, but based on early user reviews, it seems to be quite addicting. Kryzer Prologue is just the beginning of the series, however.  FDG intends to release Kryzer 3D , or “The Big One” as they call it, sometime in the near future which will take the same 2D gameplay idea and turn it into a 3D environment.  As an added benefit, FDG will be rewarding the best Kryzer Prologue players with a free copy of Kryzer 3D along with their name in the game’s credits.  FDG will be giving away this awesome prize and unique claim to fame every week until Kryzer 3D ’s release.  To win a free download code for Kryzer 3D and your name in the game’s credits, simply register the highest score on Kryzer Prologue ’s leader boards during a single week in normal mode.  It would be to your advantage to purchase and play the game as early as possible because the more players that start competing for this prize, the more difficult it will be. Kryzer Prologue is available in the App Store for only $.99. Embedded below is a gameplay video for Kryzer Prologue . Weekend Rumor: Next iPhone stats coming into focus

Monday, May 25th, 2009

Our favorite rumor for the holiday weekend comes from John Gruber and the Daring Fireball site. One of the best things about this one is that Gruber is said to have a quite strong track record for his Apple-related predictions. And he has some very positive thoughts on what’s in store for us with the

iPhone app can help you to stop smoking?

Monday, May 25th, 2009

We have apps that will help you with speaking other languages, apps that will tell you what direction you’re walking in, and apps that will tell you what birdcall you’re listening to, or what song is playing. But here’s one of the first ’self-help’ iPhone apps out there: My Quitline. Scientists from George Washington University have

Possible Confirmation Next-Gen iPhone Form Factor To Remain The Same?

Monday, May 25th, 2009

There have been many rumors flying around, especially as of late, that have indicated the next generation iPhone will keep the same form factor as the iPhone 3G, or at least close to it. A new finding from a MacTalk forum member via MacRumors may help further solidify this rumor. The MacTalk forum member stumbled upon this new finding within the iPhone OS 3.0 beta 5. The new finding clearly shows an icon for the unreleased iPhone2,1 model. iPhone2,1 is an internal indicator for the next-gen iPhone, or at least it is assumed to be because the original iPhone’s indicator was 1,1 while the iPhone 3G’s is 1,2. If you look very closely at the iPhone2,1 icon, you will notice little or no change between it and the iPhone1,2 icon. The images are rather small and difficult to discern, but if there were any major form factor modifications in the next-gen iPhone, they should be at least somewhat recognizable in this new icon, which they obviously are not. So is this enough evidence to finally come to the conclusion that the next-gen iPhone will remain the same on the outside?  Well, I wouldn’t go out and buy a new protective case for the next-gen iPhone just yet if I was you.  It’s better to be safe than sorry. Capture those spur of the moment ideas with iNapkin

Rain Terror From The Sky On Your iPhone With iBomber

Monday, May 25th, 2009

A few weeks ago we previewed Cobra Mobile’s new arcade-style bombing game,  Bombs Away, and the game looked like it could be tons of bomb dropping fun.  Today Cobra Mobile released Bombs Away , which has now been given the new title of iBomber , and it still looks like a great choice for the casual iPhone and iPod touch gamer. iBomber, as it is now called, is an arcade-style bombing game based in the Pacific Ocean in 1943.  In the game, you are a young pilot protecting your fleet from forces on land and at sea.  The gameplay consists of lining up your targets and hitting a big red bombs away button.  It sounds simple, but the sheer joy of blowing stuff up by hitting the big red button may be enough to attract many classic arcade gamers.   iBomber contains 12 missions, smooth gameplay, stylized graphics, and addicting pick-up-and-play gameplay. iBomber is now available in the App Store for $2.99. If you end up giving it a try, stop back and tell us what you think.  We have embedded the original preview trailer for iBomber below to give you an idea of what to expect from this arcade bomber. iPhone eBook App Rejected For Displaying Kama Sutra Now Approved

Monday, May 25th, 2009

Stop me if you have heard this one before.  A developer’s application was rejected due to “objectionable” content even though the application itself doesn’t actually contain any objectionable content.  Said developer tries to contact Apple regarding the unnecessary rejection to no avail.  Developer writes a long letter on their blog explaining the ridiculousness of the situation and a public outcry ensues.  Apple goes back on their original decision and approves the application unchanged.  That pretty much sums up what happened to James Montgomerie and his eBook reading application Eucalyptus . Eucalyptus is an eBook application that is able to pull in content from the popular free eBook site, Project Gutenberg .  Project Gutenberg is simply a large database of books that are free due to their copyrights expiring, and one of the books that is available through the site is a version of the ancient Indian text Kama Sutra , which Apple considered to be objectionable content.  The book itself is already available on the iPhone via a host of other sources, so logically there is no reason the application should have been rejected. James Montgomerie, the developer of Eucalyptus , wrote a long blog entry explaining the situation and how he felt he had been wronged by Apple.  He attempted to remedy the situation by contacting Apple in every way he knew how, but he ultimately got no response.  He then decided to resubmit the application with a filter that would block the the offending text, hoping Apple would approve. The general public and the media got a hold of this not-so-surprising story and once again shined the spotlight on Apple’s busted review process.  Apple responded to this outcry by not only allowing the application to be placed in the App Store, but they asked Montgomerie to resubmit the application without the filter, effectively allowing it to access the Kama Sutra content as it had when it was initially submitted to the App Store. Earlier today I received a phone call from an Apple representative. He was very complimentary about Eucalyptus . We talked about the confusion surrounding its App Store rejections, which I am happy to say is now fully resolved. He invited me to re-build and submit a version of Eucalyptus with no filters for immediate approval, and that full version is now available on the iPhone App Store. This isn’t, of course, the first case of App Store application review absurdity and it surely won’t be the last.  We will just have to keep waiting for the process to be revamped, but in the meantime, developers must keep making sure cases like this one don’t go unnoticed. James Montgomerie’s Eucalyptus is now safely available in the App Store for $9.99. Next-gen iPhone icons found deep in the iPhone SDK

Monday, May 25th, 2009

This latest bit is short and sweet. If you remember back, the iPhone SDK revealed an image of the iPhone 3G shortly before it was released last year, and now it seems the same has been found for the next-gen iPhone. Of course, this years discovery is not quite as exciting as last years. It
