Easily Jot Down Text From A Photo With PhotoText

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

If you have ever needed to get text from a photo on your iPhone or iPod touch, you can understand the difficulty of trying to memorize it long enough to back out of your photo library and launch your notes application.  A new application is available in the App Store that allows you to make this process that much easier. PhotoText allows you to open a photo in the application, or you can take a new photo within the application itself, and easily jot down the text from the photo.  You can zoom in, swipe, or rotate the photo until you find the desired text contained within it.  You can then open the text editor portion of the application and start typing.  Once you have jotted down the text, you can send it via email, SMS, call a number, or Google Text, which will allow you to perform a search of the text in mobile Safari. Of course the camera functionality is only available for the iPhone, but you can still pull images in from your library if you are an iPod touch user.  Just to be clear, this application requires manual input of the text itself, as it doesn’t contain an optical character recognition feature, so don’t expect it to do all of the work for you. PhotoText is available in the App Store for $.99. Sirius XM iPhone App Details, Still No Release Date

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

We already knew that a Sirius XM iPhone application was in the works , but at that time no other details about the application were available.  Today Sirius XM showed a slide during their shareholder summit that contained a screenshot of their new iPhone application, and it gives us a glimpse of what’s in store. BusinessInsider was able to nab the somewhat blurry screenshot pictured above, which shows some of the Sirius XM iPhone application’s UI.  Judging from this single image, it looks like the application will allow you to browse Sirius XM’s content by categories, channels, and favorites.  The application also contains a shopping feature, which is assumed to tie into Apple’s iTunes Store in some way. According to BusinessInsider, the Sirius XM application will be free to download, but you must be a subscriber to the service to use the application.  The Sirius XM streaming service is regularly priced at $12.95 per month, but if you already have the service through other means such as an in-car subscription, you can pay $3 per month more to get the streaming service added on. Sirius XM also shined some light on the content that will be available through the application: “The SIRIUS XM app will deliver an expanded programming lineup that includes SIRIUS XM’s exclusive sports talk, news, comedy, and 100% commercial free music channel, as well as new talk, comedy, and music showcase channels.” The release date for the application remains unknown, but it is assumed that it should be arriving sometime shortly after the launch of iPhone OS 3.0. Now that you know more of the details, are more or less excited about Sirius XM’s new iPhone application? Related Posts Sirius XM Radio iPhone App To Launch In Next Few Weeks? Use WreckMate To Easily Record Vital Information After An Accident

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

Having been involved in a couple of fender-benders myself (none of them were my fault, I swear), I can fully understand the importance of recording every last detail of the accident so the insurance company, along with the silly person who decided to run into you, doesn’t get away with not doing their part to remedy the situation.  To make the whole process of taking down all of this information a little easier, developer Steven Nakhla created WreckMate for your iPhone or iPod touch. WreckMate allows you to record accurate information about the other driver, their car, and their insurance details after an accident.  The application also allows you to take photos using your iPhone’s camera to record visual evidence of the accident.   WreckMate uses your iPhone’s GPS to accurately record the location of the incident as well.  You can also create your own driver profile to quickly and easily exchange information with the other driver. Steven Nakhla is working on making WreckMate even more useful with version 1.1 by adding the ability to email your profile information to the other driver, and you will also be able to email your detailed report to the other driver or insurance company. WreckMate is now available in the App Store for $1.99. Just be sure to have your iPhone along with WreckMate on you at all times, otherwise you will have to resort to the old pen and paper method after an accident. Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

From the developers of the hit game Archibald’s Adventures comes a new title that has you defending the people of a small town against outlaws after a sheriff has been killed in the wild, wild west. Westbang is a fast paced tap shooter that will have you competing against your friends for the highest score possible.  The game features the classic game concept of speed shooting, where you must shoot all of the bad guys that burst through the doors, but you also must avoid shooting the innocent civilians. Westbang features 21 different deadly bandits, a dubbed animated intro, 3 different game modes, and online leader boards. Westbang isn’t just your run-of-the-mill tap shooter either, because the team at Rake in Grass has put a unique comic-style touch into the game that adds tons of character through sounds and animations. Westbang is available in the App Store for only $.99. Also, to celebrate the release of Westbang , Rake in Grass has reduced the price of their other title, Archibald’s Adventures , to only $1.99, so now you can pick both games up for less than $3.00! AT&T Formally Announces Plans To Boost 3G Speeds

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

AT&T has decided that today is finally the day to formally announce their plans to begin upgrading their mobile broadband speeds.  AT&T plans on beginning the upgrade to High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) 7.2 technology later this year and is expecting the upgrade to be complete in 2011. AT&T Mobility CEO Ralph de la Vega had already indicated such plans earlier this year, but AT&T has finally decided to make it official.  The upgrade to the network could allow theoretical speeds of up to 7.2Mbps, but in a real-world environment the speeds will obviously vary based on quite a few factors, including location, device, and overall traffic on the network at the time of use.  AT&T plans on deploying this new technology across their entire network, and they will announce the deployment on a local basis as the speeds are cranked up.  AT&T also announced they will be introducing multiple HSPA 7.2-compatiable laptop cards and smartphones, like the rumored “enhanced 3G iPhone,” beginning later this year. But that’s not all AT&T has planned for this year, they have also listed further plans for 2009, including: Near-Doubling Radio Frequency Capacity - In 2008 and 2009 to date, high-quality 850 MHz spectrum has been deployed in more than half of AT&T’s 3G network footprint to improve overall coverage and in-building reception, with additional markets planned for later in the year. More Bandwidth to Cell Sites - We are adding fiber-optic connectivity and additional capacity to thousands of cell sites across the country this year, expanding the critical connections that deliver traffic from a cell site into the global IP backbone network. These upgrades will support the higher mobile broadband speeds enabled by both HSPA 7.2 and LTE. More Cell Sites - Deployment of about 2,100 new cell sites across the country. Wi-Fi Integration - Many AT&T smartphones will be able to switch seamlessly between 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity. AT&T customers with qualifying smartphone and 3G LaptopConnect plans have access to the nation’s largest Wi-Fi network – more than 20,000 hotspots, including locations in all 50 states – at no additional charge. AT&T’s global Wi-Fi footprint covers more than 90,000 hotspots, and AT&T also can create permanent or temporary extended Wi-Fi zones in areas with high 3G network use, like a grouping of hotels or a festival. MicroCells - Customer trials leading toward general availability of AT&T 3G MicroCell offerings, which utilize femtocells to enhance in-building wireless coverage. Finally, AT&T also took this opportunity to announce their plans to begin 4G LTE trials in 2010, with deployment beginning in 2011. That is a lot of AT&T network related news to take in, so just sit back, relax, and imagine the possibilities. Review: Toki Tori

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

Overview Take control of Toki Tori, a cute little…baby chicken? At least I think that’s what it’s suppose to be. I’ll be honest, I’ve never heard of or played this game until now. It’s cute and entertaining, but is it worth the price of admission? If you like casual and challenging platformer games that are, well…cute…then I say yes. Because this game does just about everything right. And really, what more could you ask for? Features A lot, actually…where to even start? How about the the amount of levels that you can play? Try 80 different levels that are spread over four large worlds! Yup, you heard me right. This game has a ridiculous amount of levels in it. They also arm you with all kinds of different items to help you along the way like the Telewarp (which warps you from one section of the game to the other), InstantRock (self explanatory I think), and the Slug Sucker (I don’t want to spoil this one, but trust me when I say it’s awesome). Breakdown The Good: Well…just about everything. Again, this is my first time being introduced to this game. Never played it on Gameboy or the Wii so this is all I have to go off of and it didn’t disappoint. The graphics are very impressive as is the gameplay and the amount of content included with the game. This is definitely worth the price for sure. The controls for this game are also top notch and extremely innovative for this type of game. With a game like this you expect to control every aspect of the character like jumping, moving, climbing, etc. However, in this you just tap where you want Toki to go and it goes there. At first I was a little annoyed by this, but as I got more into the game I realized that this is the perfect way to do a platformer like this. The iPhone is known for it’s clunky controls, right? Lord knows I have had many issues with the Virtual Keyboard that the iPhone has implemented. Click here for my column on Virtual Keyboards by the way. What the devs have done here is taken that control scheme and thrown it right out the window. Screw the bad controls! We’ve got something better and you know what? I works amazingly well. I loved that I could just touch the screen and the character would go there. The items you have really are the core of the game and it takes a lot of strategy to get the levels completed once you get further along in it. I also love the Wildcard feature here. This is basically a free pass on any level that is giving you trouble…awesome! These games can always get frustrating when you get to that level that you just cannot get past. Use the Wildcard and it just skips you to the next level. You can only use it once and if you want to get it back, you must go back and complete said level that you skipped. Just a great feature here. The Bad: I really couldn’t find anything wrong with this game. It has only one music track…how about that? However, you can turn if off so…what else? Honestly, you either like these type of game or you don’t…period. If you like it, the game is great. If not, then you won’t. The Verdict This is absolutely one of the top platformer games on the iPhone/iPod Touch, no doubt. If you are into these types of games it will not disappoint and the price is actually low in my book for what you get here. If you want a casual, challenging, and fun game…this is the one for you. AT&T grabbing more customers than ever with iPhone according to recent reports

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

Long considered a lure for carriers, Apple’s iPhone is now believed to be attracting a full third of those switching providers towards AT&T — the highest ever percentage of converts since the iPhone was released and more impetus for AT&T to keep the iPhone exclusive to them, though that probably won’t happen down the road.
