Put Your Exploring Shoes On, It’s Time To ‘Return To Mysterious Island’

Friday, May 29th, 2009

It sure didn’t take long for Chillingo and company to get Return to Mysterious Island out the door and into the App Store.  It was only two days ago when we released the preview trailer for the game along with some screenshots, but hey, we’re definitely not complaining. Return to Mysterious Island is a new iPhone and iPod touch game inspired by the great Jules Verne novel.  The game puts you in the shoes of Mina, a sailor who is stranded on what is assumed to be a deserted island somewhere in the south Pacific.  You must fight for your survival until you are rescued by exploring the island for food, tools, and shelter. Return to Mysterious Island is said to contain about 15 hours of total gameplay, and it includes a full 3D environment, mini-games, intriguing puzzles, ambient sound, and an advanced item combination inventory.   Return to Mysterious Island also has an intuitive in-game tutorial, which will help guide you through your first steps on the island. Return to Mysterious Island is now available in the App Store for $4.99. Keep an eye on the site for our full in-depth review of Return to Mysterious Island .  We have also embedded the preview trailer for the game below. Review: Killer Edge

Friday, May 29th, 2009

Overview: Killer Edge is another racing game that puts you in the driver’s seat or, more accurately, behind the car… Twist and turn your way to the finish line, testing your skills to the max along the way! Features: Killer Edge affords you the basic gameplay options of any racing game. There is GP mode where you race for a cup of either Bronze, Silver, or Gold. Quickplay is a single race, which is just that - quick. There is also Time Attack mode where you try to get the best time on any given track. The game also features twelve cars and several tracks that increase in frequency of turns, thus making them more difficult. While most racing games allow you to control your vehicle only by tilting the device, Killer Edge has a “Touch” option in the settings menu, letting you control the car by touching either side of the screen. Also incorporated into the game are MarioKart like power-ups which increase your attack, defense, traction, etc. for as long as they remain active. The Good: So, as said above, you are able to control your car by touch as opposed to tilting. It is, by far, the best feature of Killer Edge. I am naturally opposed to tilting controls - don’t ask my why, they just mess me up, whatever the game. The variety of car is another thing to mention in The Good as there are a multitude (yes, twelve is a multitude) to choose from. The Bad: Let’s start with the graphics. I’m not sure if any of you are, or were, avid arcade goers, but the graphics in this game are reminiscent of Outrun (an older racing game that was impossible to win.) Sadly, however, they are just not up to par with the standards of the day. The next thing is the “upgrades.” So, you drive through colorful blocks that give you certain powers depending on the block. But, to be honest, I noticed no difference whatsoever. When I picked up the game, I was expecting there to be weapons with which to destroy your opponent. This is not the case. After you drive through the upgrade block, an icon appears in the top right corner of the screen and then disappears after a short while. But, there are no weapons to speak of, and as far as a difference in handling or traction - there is no difference. As I was playing the game, not only did I find it incredibly easy to drift off of the track, even when turning at full capacity, but I actually went off of the track through a building - which, one would assume, should keep you on the road. These things just shouldn’t happen in games these days… The Verdict: While I can appreciate the efforts of a (more than likely) first time app developer, a racing game probably isn’t the best place to start. In my humble opinion, this app is probably not worth the time - at this point. Killer Edge is a great first attempt for a dev and, with a few upgrades, the game could be pretty cool. As I said, the touch controls are good, but it’s just not quite there yet. Especially for $1.99. Review: Flick NBA Basketball

Overview Choose one of your favorite NBA superstars as you take to the court in this very simple and casual game from Freeverse. Ever just want to go outside and shoot some hoops? You don’t really want to play an actual game, you just kind of want to shoot around for a while. That’s basically how I felt about this game. In short, the game features a multitude of mini-games that allow you to, well…shoot hoops for the most part. There’s the usual 3 point shootout contest and H.O.R.S.E. as well as a few others thrown in there to mix things up. With over thirty different NBA players to choose from, this game has a lot to offer. The only thing missing? Dunk contest…sigh. However, I just heard from the devs that the next update has a Slam Dunk Contest included in it! No word when that will hit, but they did say soon…awesome! Features As I said above, the app features five separate mini-games. There’s the 3 point shootout where you basically shoot 3 pointers around the arch in five different positions. Each spot has five basketballs for you to shoot before moving on to the next one. You are also timed so be quick or you’ll never get to the last ball before the clock runs out. There’s the Hotshot Arcade game that is basically one of those moving hoops that you find in amusement parks or arcade galleries. You have to shoot four balls over and over in ninety seconds. Can you beat my score of 111? Probably…I’m not that good. There’s a Long Shot Challenge where you start in front of the hoop and continue moving backwards until the time runs out. They also have the classic game, H.O.R.S.E. If you’ve never heard of H.O.R.S.E. then for shame. But in case you haven’t, you basically pick a spot on the court and shoot the ball. If you get the basket, your opponent must make the same shot. If he misses, he gets a letter. If you spell out “Horse” you lose. The last mini-game is the Ball Spin. Here you have to keep the ball spinning on the finger as long as possible. Spin it by flicking left or right on the ball. Flip your device upwards to toss the ball in the air and catch it with the finger to score bonus points. Balance the ball with the accelerometer. It’s harder than it looks. The last main feature here would be the NBA players you can choose to play as. There is a player from every team in the league, thirty in total. Breakdown The Good: I was really impressed at the amount of players to choose from in this game. There’s a player from every team on here so you’re bound to find one of your favorites to play as. There’s plenty of different games to choose from so you don’t get bored just playing the 3 point contest or whatever. The graphics are stunning and the sound effects and crowd noises sound pretty good for the most part. The music fits the game and works well. The controls are simple enough to get down and it makes the game fairly easy to play. I enjoyed most of the games and the 3 point contest is easily the best of the bunch. Once that Slam Dunk Contest shows up however, I’m sure that will be the top game on my list. The Bad: I found the game way too easy. Once you get the shooting down, you never miss. I got every ball in the 3 point contest, never missed in H.O.R.S.E., and killed in the Long Shot. The only games that are challenging are the Hotshot Arcade and Ball Spin. However, those two games are the weakest in the group in my opinion. The game does come with a lot of content, but it’s just really easy. With that said, if you play against a friend rather than the computer it becomes a lot more challenging and fun. The computer is really easy to beat, but play with a friend and the app gets a lot more entertaining for sure. I highly recommend doing this. The Verdict Like I said, this is a casual shoot around type of game. If you are looking for something to take up hours of your time, this isn’t it. It is fun for the first few minutes and maybe that’s enough for you? Maybe not? It’s worth the price and it does come with a lot of content. If you are looking for something to do between the playoff games, as I was, this is not a bad choice. Doom Classic Screenshots, Still A Work In Progress

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

id Software’s Wolfenstein 3D Classic has been selling like hotcakes ever since it was placed in the App Store.  People tend to gravitate towards these classic titles for the iPhone because they are games people have grown to love, and they usually bring back some fond memories.  If the success of Wolfenstein 3D Classic is any indication of things to come, Doom Classic for the iPhone is going to be one huge success. John Carmack is the technical director for id Software as well as the co-founder.  He basically has had a hand in everything id has ever made.  Carmack has been working on the iPhone version of Doom for the last several weeks, putting other projects on hold to get a working version of Doom Classic up and running.  He recently updated id’s website with a few new screenshots of the game along with a progress report concerning the games development: Wolfenstein 3D Classic was a quickie project to satisfy my curiosity and test the iPhone waters, but Doom is a more serious effort. In addition to the millions of people with fond memories of the game, there is still an active gaming / development community surrounding the original Doom, and I don’t want to disappoint any of them. Carmack goes on to explain how Doom Classic is running at a smooth 30fps, while the game looks and feels just as it did when you first played it in 1993: With the speed (a solid 30 fps, even in the more aggressive later levels), the audio, the resolution, and the rendering quality, it is Doom as you remember it, which is quite a bit better than it actually was. Doom Classic will allow you to play the full original game along with local Wi-Fi multiplayer.  Carmack stated that they will update the game after iPhone OS 3.0 is released to support Bluetooth multiplayer. Carmack is currently taking a break from Doom Classic as the first build has been submitted to beta testers, but he assumes the game should be ready for submission to the App Store sometime next month. Google Latitude To Be A Web App

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

Google announced that they would be creating a mobile version of Google Latitude for the iPhone and iPod touch way back in February, and at that time they stated it would be available “very soon.”  Obviously very soon never came, but it now makes sense as to why Google has taken so long to finally bring the service over to the iPhone.  It’s because they were waiting for Mobile Safari to get updated. TechCrunch is reporting that, during Google’s keynote address at the Google I/O conference, they showed off a working version of Latitude on the iPhone.  Latitude has been available on many other platforms, including Google’s own Android for quite some time now, but Google has been holding off on an iPhone version because of HTML 5 support: But also interesting is that the reason Google has been waiting for the 3.0 software is because it’s not actually creating a native iPhone app for Latitude — as all other location-based services on the iPhone are — instead it’s using the Safari web browser to run Latitude. Thanks to HTML 5, Safari will be able to access a user’s location information and Latitude will be able to access that as well (provided the user gives permission). This will put it on par with what Google is doing in its browser for Android. There you have it, Google has no intentions of creating a separate Latitude application for the iPhone as many previously thought.  Google was simply waiting for Mobile Safari to be able to access a user’s location information. Not having a dedicated Latitude app won’t be the worst thing in the world, because at least we know it will be available for free. And don’t worry, Latitude will be just fine as a web app because Google is the king of web apps after all. Rumor Indicates Next-Gen iPhone Will Have An Illuminated Apple Logo

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

Many of you may recall that we revealed a list of specs for the next generation iPhone about one week ago.  We never claimed that any of the specs were set in stone, but we had enough confidence in our source to at least post the alleged specs and allow you to come to your own conclusion.  Today a new rumor has surfaced which further indicates that we may have been closer than we thought with the next-gen iPhone specs. CrunchGear is reporting that, according to one of their tipsters, the next-gen iPhone will indeed have an illuminated Apple logo on its backside: A tipster has seen the new matte iPhone and the bugger has a light-up Apple. That’s right: it lights the freak up. Who knew? Their tipster also indicated that the next-gen iPhone will be sporting a new bezel , just like the rumors have stated. Rumors are simply that, rumors, so none of this may be true at all, but if it is, we think someone at CrunchGear may have some explaining to do. So what do you think, would an illuminated Apple logo be totally awesome, or would you rather do without to conserve battery power? Skyworks Releases Yet Another Sports Game, Goaaal!

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

Skyworks has made a living off of their simple and yet somehow addicting sports related games for the iPhone and iPod touch.  It’s this simple approach that has allowed their games like  World Cup Ping Pong to break into the App Store’s top ten paid applications list.  Their brand new soccer inspired game, Goaaal! , follows this tried and true concept. In Goaaal! , you are required to kick a soccer ball into a goal from the penalty spot without getting it blocked by the goalie.  You are able to adjust the speed, spin, and direction of the ball with a simple flick of your finger.  To kick the ball, simply flick it with your finger.  You can add spin by flicking from either side of the ball.  If you hold your finger on the ball for just a second, you can reposition it prior to kicking. Goaaal! also features an Arcade Shootout Mode, where you get 10 shots to get as many goals and points as possible, and a Progressive Shootout Mode, where you start out with 10 chances to score, but you can earn more shots by making multiple goals.  The game also features a local and global leader board. Goaaal! is now available in the App Store for $1.99.
