Primate Plunge - Monkey Gets New Life On The iPhone

Saturday, April 18th, 2009

In Primate Plunge you take control of a monkey appropriately named Monkey in a quest to navigate your way down through various treacherous environments.  The game was originally created in 2003 for the Mac and has now been remade into an iPhone platformer that utilizes the device’s unique controls. The goal of Primate Plunge is to get Monkey through the 6 different beautifully hand-drawn environments as quickly as possible without being killed by the spikes above.  You control Monkey by tilting your the device left or right.  Touching the screen will drop Monkey to a platform below.  There are power-ups scattered across the environment that will help assist you in your quest. For added replayability, Primate Plunge contains a high-score system and a star rating for each world.  This should keep most of you busy for some time, especially if you intend to perfect each world. Primate Plunge is available at the App Store for the introductory price of $1.99, so get it while it is cheap.  The game is also still available as freeware for all desktop platforms if you care to give it a try. Flight Control

Saturday, April 18th, 2009

Overview Experience the life of an air traffic controller as you attempt to land multiple aircraft in this highly addictive, yet very simplistic game. The game starts out very slowly and quickly picks up as you can have over fifteen different incoming flights on screen at one time. The very basic layout and ease of the controls makes this the perfect game-on-the-go when you’re looking to kill some time. Features Like I said above, the game layout and design are very simple. Because of this, there isn’t much in the way of features. What you have here is basically one airport and the object is to land the planes without crashing them into each other. That’s it really. Drag your finger across the screen and you change the aircraft’s flight plan to whatever you want it to be. There’s a Stats page and a High Score page as well. Also, there is the option to turn off the sound and listen to music from the IPod application on your device. Breakdown The Good: I found the graphics and gameplay to be the top two elements of this game. I really love the “retro” look the Devs gave to Flight Control. It fits perfectly and helps set up the tone and feel of the game right off the bat. The graphics have that “cartoon” look to them here and again, it works perfectly. The gameplay is incredibly simple, yet very effective. Like I said earlier, just drag your finger across the screen and it changes the aircraft’s flight plan. Each type of aircraft has its own landing strip (three total) and you must get each plane or helicopter landed without a mid-air collision. If the aircraft get close to each other, an alarm goes off and they get a flashing red circle around them. The Bad: The lack of options is really the only thing that this game was missing. Having only one airport and four different types of aircraft gets a little boring after a while. The game is worth $.99, but when it goes back up in price I’m not sure I would say the same thing. Other than the options, that’s really the only thing “bad” that I with the game. The Verdict Is this game worth your hard earned dollar? I’d say so. It’s fun enough and very easy to just play whenever. The hype over the game and the fact that it’s been sitting in the number one spot on the App Store’s Top 25 is a little undeserved though. Yes, it’s fun, but I’m not sure I place it in the number one spot. Like I said, it does get a little stale after you play it for about ten minutes or so. If you’ve been contemplating buying this at all, get it before the price is increased because once that happens, I wouldn’t purchase this without more options added in an update. FoodReviews Gives You Access To All Kinds Of Food Information

Friday, April 17th, 2009

If you have ever used Zeer.com , you probably already know about their new iPhone application titled  FoodReviews .  It is a simple application that allows you to access information for over 110,000 food products including nutrition facts, allergy warnings, and even user reviews.  If you haven’t ever heard of Zeer, well, it’s time to listen. Zeer.com is basically a community of normal, everyday people who enjoy being aware of the types of foods they purchase and consume.  Members of the community are able to keep track of certain products they enjoy, and even review the products they have tried, helping others form their own opinion. With Zeer’s FoodReviews iPhone application, all of this information is available at your fingertips and you don’t even need to be a member of the site.  You can access the database via an internet connection and search for almost any food product you can imagine.  The search results yield the product’s nutrition facts, allergy warnings, and user reviews.  There is also a nice, crisp image of the product so you know you have the right item.  You can also access your own personal favorites list if you have a free account set up on Zeer.com. To be clear, this isn’t a grocery list application.  It simply lists information about food products.  Also worth noting is that you can’t actually review any products from your iPhone, but the developer claims this was done on purpose to keep the quality of reviews at their best. FoodReviews is available at the App Store for $.99. Robot Wars 3D Brings Two-Player FPS Action To Your iPhone

Friday, April 17th, 2009

Throwing robots into a 3D FPS for the iPhone is never a bad idea.  What’s not to like about that combination?  One developer has taken the this formula one step further by adding head-to-head two-player action on the same device in their new game Robot Wars 3D . Robot Wars 3D is an interesting little game.  It pits two players against each other in a robot battle to the death.  The goal is to annihilate your opponent by using your giant front-mounted laser canon.  The best part is, your opponent doesn’t have to own the game or even an iPhone since Robot Wars 3D is played on the same device. Each player’s robot movements are controlled by two virtual thumbsticks, and shooting is as simple as tapping your weapon on the screen.  You are able to shoot or jump your way around obstacles since some of the items in the map are fully interactive.  Power-ups are littered all over the map for you to obtain by exploring every corner.   Robot Wars 3D utilizes the popular Unity Engine to create a pretty neat looking 3D environment. Robot Wars 3D does have a couple catches however, it is solely a two-player head-to-head FPS game played on a single map.  You won’t be playing this title by yourself, and the single map may eventually get tiresome after a while.  Of course, with the ability to add content through updates, Robot Wars 3D has a promising future, and for only $.99, what more could you ask for? SoldierAnts - It’s Like Worms With Ants

Friday, April 17th, 2009

If you were a fan of the 1995 classic artillery game Worms , you will probably become a fan of this iPhone variation with ants.   SoldierAnts is a turn-based artillery game, a genre that has become increasingly popular at the App Store, that requires you to take out other teams of ants by utilizing a wide array of weapons and terrain. SoldierAnts is actually a re-made version of a game that goes by the same name made for the Symbian platform around 2005.  This version, however, utilizes the iPhone’s unique touch controls to do battle.  The game consists of each team taking turns bombarding each other with everything they have available.  There are over 20 weapons, and 5 destructible environments to do battle on.  You can go at it against the AI in campaign mode, or simply take on an AI or a friend controlled opponent in a single battle. SoldierAnts is available at the App Store for $2.99.  If you still haven’t tried a turn-based artillery game from the App Store, or you simply haven’t found one you like, you might want to take a look at what SoldierAnts has to offer. Friday, April 17th, 2009

Unofficial QuickPWN for iPhone OS 3.0 beta 3 now available

Friday, April 17th, 2009

Similar to what we saw when iPhone OS 3.0 beta 2 was released, a jailbreak has been quickly offered up for OS 3.0 beta 3. Of course, this version of QuickPWN was not released by the iPhone Dev Team, which is where the “unofficial” comes from. But that unofficial also means if you choose to

New SlingPlayer may face the wrath of AT&T

Friday, April 17th, 2009

An apparent delay in the approval of SlingPlayer’s release on the App Store, coupled with unconfirmed reports that AT&T isn’t keen on seeing the device make its way to the iPhone, has led to speculation that the wireless carrier is seeking to have the software rejected in its current form. Formally announced at January’s Macworld Expo

Wall Street Journal iPhone app released for free in App Store

Friday, April 17th, 2009

The Wall Street Journal has traditionally been an expensive paper, costing over $100 a year for both online and print subscriptions. Now it’s free on the iPhone (just like it’s been on the BlackBerry), and its definitely worth a look. After trying it, you’ll quickly notice the content layout is nearly identical to the NYT app
