Verizon thinks an iPhone deal is in the cards with 4G network on the horizon

Sunday, April 19th, 2009

Although his company snubbed Apple on the first go-round, Verizon’s chief executive Ivan Seidenberg now says the chances of an iPhone on his network will be greater once a 4G cellular network is in place. The CEO explained to the Wall Street Journal that Apple is ‘more likely’ to want to work with Verizon due to

iPhone App Allows You To Nap At Work, Worry Free

Sunday, April 19th, 2009

Have you ever felt the need to take a quick nap during the long, arduous work week just to recharge the old batteries but were simply too afraid to get caught?  Well, there is now an app for that.  SilentLogic Studios created iNap @Work to help you sneak a quick nap in at work without the fear of getting fired. iNap @Work is a simple, easy-to-use application that features 5 different settings for common office sounds to assist you in your quest for more sleep.  The sounds range from keyboard typing, mouse clicks, miscellaneous office noises, paper shuffling, and even human related noises.  You can also adjust the frequency of the noises to better reflect your regular work day environment. Alright, so iNap @Work probably won’t stop you from getting fired for taking a nap at work, but it is a fairly entertaining novelty item nonetheless. iNap @Work is available at the App Store for the special introductory price of $.99. New Music And Podcast Features In iPhone OS 3.0 Beta

Sunday, April 19th, 2009

Today marks the third consecutive day of new iPhone OS 3.0 beta features.  That’s quite a feat.  The newly discovered features include variable audio scrubbing speeds, variable playback speeds for podcasts, single-tap jump back for podcasts, and additional data displayed for podcasts. The additional audio and podcast features were first discovered by World of Apple .  The variable scrubbing speed feature will allow you to fine tune your navigation within an audio track by utilizing four different scrubbing speeds. Podcasts received a few key additions as well.  In iPhone OS 3.0 you will be able to adjust the playback speeds for podcasts to 1/2x, 1x, and 2x.  In addition, you will also be able to rewind podcast playback by 30 seconds with a single tap of a button.  Podcasts will display more data including run time, time left, and publication date.  This is great news for all you podcast junkies out there. Which of these new features do you think you will utilize the most?  I will place my vote for variable speed audio scrubbing. Ember

Sunday, April 19th, 2009

Overview Finally, the ability to stay connected to Campfire at anytime has arrived in the App Store! Ember, a Campfire client, allows its users to chat easily in large or small groups right from your IPhone. Although not without a few issues, Ember is major step in the right direction for those of us using Campfire as our main instant messenger service. Features Ember is loaded with almost everything you have available from the desktop versions of Campfire…almost. There’s live previews of images that you can directly access from within the chat room. Inline viewing of multiple file formats such as Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc. The ability to not only have unlimited chat rooms, but you also have the option to seamlessly toggle between each one of these chat rooms with very little effort. It works with free and paid Campfire accounts and SSL accounts are supported here as well. Breakdown The Good: Campfire on the go! Nuff said! Okay, maybe I’ll say a little bit more here, but that about sums it up right there. You can chat on the go with anyone in Campfire whenever and wherever you want. I tested Ember on a computer and on the IPhone simultaneously and the application on the phone was pretty close to the response time on the desktop computer I was on. The phone, or application, does lag for a few seconds sometimes, (I was using WiFi the entire time by the way) but not enough to really cause any major issues. Being able to sign in once and always be signed in was a major plus for me as well. I know some people have issues with the application leaving you signed in, but if you’re that worried about security on your phone just lock it with a password at start up. For me, not having to re-sign in was great. Bouncing between one chat room and another is fairly quick and extremely easy. Being able to view different file formats is also a major bonus. The Bad: The major issue I have with this application is the lack of sound when someone writes a new message. The app does have sound and vibration that alert you when another chat room that you are not in has a new message, but the current room you are in doesn’t alert you at all. It gets kind of frustrating to constantly have to look at the screen and see if anyone has sent anything new. If you are like me, you are multi-tasking and have a bunch of things going on at once. Without a sound or vibration alert, it can get tedious after a while. However, with that said I have been in touch with the developers of Ember and they are working on addressing this issue in a future update. So it might be a little annoying for now, but they’re fixing it so be patient. Not being able to upload any files is another issue, although that lies more with the phone’s capabilities than the app itself. Still, it’s an issue all the same. An update is coming that will allow you to at least upload images from the phone, but for now that’s about it. Maybe when the new 3.0 comes out that might change? Maybe not… The Verdict If you’re like me and use Campfire on a day-to-day basis to stay in contact with your fellow employees/co-workers concerning work related issues or whatever, then this app is a must have…hands down. However, if you use this more for socializing and it’s just another messenger service you use to stay in touch with friends, that steep $9.99 might not be worth it. Especially with so many free social networking applications out there. For ten bucks you really need to ask yourself this: Do I need this application? Is it something that I will use everyday? If the answer is yes, then it absolutely should be on your device. If the answer to those questions is no…I say go with any one of the numerous other free social networking apps out there instead. Why Jailbreak: Backgrounder

Sunday, April 19th, 2009

One of the most common issues I have come upon with my iPhone is not being able to carry on Instant message conversations while I am doing other functions on my phone. I have Palringo, which lets me chat on AIM, Y!, MSN, ICQ, Google Talk, Gadu-Gadu, Jabber, iChat and their own network in one app for free. The app even keeps me logged into the chat services through their server, however once I close the app, I am not told when I receive a new message until I reopen it. After some time of just coping with this restriction, I started looking around - and found my answer.  An app called backgrounder. The whole purpose of the app is to let apps run in the background. After I select an app to run in the background, no matter which app I am using, I will be notified of new messages. Backgrounder can be used with a number of apps, but for this article, we will just cover the chat functionality this will allow if your phone is jailbroken. I understand the reason Apple did not originally implement background apps is because of the possibility of crashing due to memory overflow. And I have experienced this personally a number of times. If I run one app while I have two in the background, my phone will crash almost immediately. It’s become a bit of a balance, and requires trial and error to find when I have to close my background apps in order to run other ones, but once you figure it out, it is quite manageable. Setting up an app to run in the background is quite simple. You select Auto-enabled applications once you start backgrounder and select yes for each app you want to run in the background. When using Palringo, it will place a little number on the Palringo app icon showing the number of messages waiting. Another thing that I found appealing about Parlingo is that it works well with StatusNotifier, and works in conjunction with custom home screens like HomeScreen 2.0. Background apps are the number one request by iPhone users, and until Apple does a hardware update on the memory of the iPhone, I am very doubtful that Apple will include this function. It is up to us to make the iPhone what we want. Apple is a few steps behind, so lets pick up the slack by jailbreaking and show Apple what functionality we want and what functionality we can add with our own creativity. Remember that without us pushing to create new apps to add functionality, Apple would not add the functionality we want to the updates. I am the first person to admit that using some jailbroken apps can crash your phone if you load too many apps in the background, but I believe that the pros of jailbreaking outweigh the cons. All computers have a memory overflow and the iPhone is no exception. A new Apple patent on a motion-aware iPhone user interface points again at the possibility of a front-facing video camera for video chat in next generation iPhones. One that won’t require the 3G videoconferencing kit. This could be huge for meetings, dating, all kinds of as yet undiscovered applications. The new patent describes a morphing interface

Hulu rumored to have an iPhone app under development

Rumor has it that a Hulu app for the iPhone is currently under development. Zoltor Will Speak Your Fortune

Saturday, April 18th, 2009

One of my favorite Tom Hanks movies of all time is Big .  If you have seen the film before, you may recall that he used a fortune telling machine at the fair to make himself, well, big.   Zoltor , a new application now available at the App Store, offers up a fairly creepy re-creation of this same machine for your iPhone. At the touch of a button, Zoltor is able to speak your fortune and if you wish, it will also tell you your lucky number for the day.  The fortunes can be insightful, humorous, or sometimes bizarre, which should be able to keep things interesting for a while.   Also, if you care to know, the number 38 is supposed to be “particularly auspicious” for me today. The concept of the application is pretty basic, and it is purely for entertainment purposes only, but I just can’t get over how creepy Zoltor looks.  The application takes on a certain personality from its crisp artwork and animations. So, if you are into fortune telling and love Tom Hanks films, give Zoltor a shot. Zoltor is available at the App Store for $.99.
