Mactracker Now Available At The App Store For Free

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

Ian Page initially stole our Apple fanboy hearts when he released his freeware version of Mactracker for the Mac OS.  His comprehensive list of Apple products and details just couldn’t be matched by any one single source, and the fact that it is still being offered for free is just icing on the cake.  That same wonderful Ian Page has just released an iPhone version of Mactracker and guess what?  It is also available for free! Mactracker for the iPhone is basically like its desktop counterpart.  The only real differences are that it is portable and lacks model icons since they contain Apple trademarked content, something Apple doesn’t allow at the App Store. Mactracker offers detailed information about every Macintosh ever made, including items such as processor speed, memory, graphics cards, and even supported Mac OS versions.  Also included in Mactracker is information on other Apple products such as iPods, iPhones, Apple displays, and much much more. Mactracker is available for free at the App Store, so go download immediately. Related Posts Apple Q2 Financial Results Tired Of The Same Old Girls In Bikinis? iPhone Dominates Competition In All App Related Categories

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

A recent research study by the mobile analytics firm Flurry basically reaffirms what we already know, the iPhone dominates all of its competitors, at least from an applications standpoint. These findings, published by ReadWriteWeb , indicate that Apple’s platform leads all other companies in active developers, applications developed, and consumer usage. The study shows that 72 percent of smartphone developers are writing for the iPhone.  The next closest platform was Google’s Android at 22 percent.  As for applications actually produced, the iPhone garnered 64 percent of the business while Android and JavaME each only had 16 percent.  Flurry’s study also reveals that 87 percent of all users are running iPhone apps.  The next closest competitor in this category was Android at 7 percent. We must take into account where this data is coming from.  Flurry’s data was based on 8 million users and 100 applications.  Flurry clearly states that very few of the developers that participate in their studies are BlackBerry developers.  This would explain why the BlackBerry platform barely even registered on any of their charts.  As to why this is, Flurry’s VP of marketing Peter Farago isn’t even sure: “Why haven’t [more] BlackBerry developers signed up for analytics?” he asks. Other data was included in the research study as well.  Flurry reveals that the App Store is a hit-driven market, where developers need a solid hit application to ensure future success, just like the music industry. They also claim that marketing is key the key to success. The final and somewhat surprising statistic reveals that only about 10 percent of users update their applications.  This means that all of those quality updates after an application has been released are going unnoticed.  This has to be disheartening news to many developers who rely on the release and update method, where applications can be released at near completion and then finished off through a series of updates once the application is placed at the App Store. Are any of you surprised by these numbers? Related Posts Apple Asked Google Not To Use Multi-Touch? Hidden Gems: Week Four

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

Some apps get all the attention, sitting atop the top 25 list just begging to be downloaded. Some slip down the list and out into the iTunes wilderness, never to be heard from again. Hidden Gems is about giving these apps the attention they deserve. Pocket Tanks (Free) / Pocket Tanks Deluxe ($4.99) It’s hard to follow up lasts week’s killer gem, Wundrbar, but I’ll give it a go with Pocket Tanks. Pocket Tanks is one of my favorite games. I got my first copy almost seven years ago on my first Mac. Ever since the App Store was announced I wondered whether Pocket Tanks would be developed for iPhone. Last week my curiosity finally got the better of me and I e-mailed Michael P. Welch, the developer of Pocket Tanks, to see if he would ever make an iPhone version of the game. He got back to me. Not only had he been developing the iPhone version for the past eight months but it was mere days from hitting the App Store. I couldn’t believe it. It would be like a die-hard Quentin Tarantino fan finding out the director was making Kill Bill 3 and it would be released within a week. Until Nintendo releases Super Mario Bros. 3 for the iPhone, which I know will never happen officially, this will be my favorite game to finally get an iPhone port. Now, all gushing aside, let’s talk about why this is a hidden gem. iShoot is the king of artillery games on iPhone. It has been in the top 25 lists off and on for months and has an impressive feature set, including weapon creation and wifi multiplayer support in version 2.0. But, if you like artillery games or dislike iShoot, it’s time to give Pocket Tanks a try. Pocket Tanks a great mix of luck and skill. There are over 100 weapons in the deluxe version and 35 weapons in the free version. You can play against the computer or pass and play with a friend. At the start of the game you choose from 20 weapons. You can either take turns picking which weapons you want, which requires strategy, or you can choose to distribute them randomly, introducing more luck into the game. The gameplay is as simple as choosing the weapon you want to fire, the angle and the power. Strategy is much more complicated. Some weapons arch overhead, some burrow through the ground and some shoot straight through anything. While the controls are simple, it’s incredibly difficult to find the exact combination of angle and firepower to really nail your opponent when it counts. In addition, you have to plan ahead and decide when you should try to bury your enemy under dirt or blow them to kingdom come with a nuke. If Welch follows the pattern he set on the desktop versions of the game, he’ll expand on the game over time by releasing more weapon packs. After all, the great variety of weapons are what make this game so great. When the app store was first announced two games came immediately to mind that I hoped would make it onto the App Store. First, was Chopper (which I covered last week because the developer released a free version of the game). Second, was Pocket Tanks. Of course, Chopper has been in and out of the top 25 lists for several months now and I’ve always wondered whether Pocket Tanks would be ported. Now that it’s here, I couldn’t be happier. It doesn’t have the bells and whistles of iShoot, but it it’s a faithful port of a great game with a ton of weapons. Pocket Tanks was really meant to be played on the iPhone to begin with. Yelp! 2.0 Sure, Yelp has been downloaded a heck of a lot, but you might not have noticed Yelp 2.0 hit recently. If you skipped it or found it lacking in the past, now is the time to give it another go. One of the major drawbacks with Yelp (and quickly pointed out by pricey competitor Zagat To Go ‘09) is you have to sift through a bunch of really wordy reviews to find what’s good (or bad) at a particular establishment. Two huge improvements in this release help solve that problem. First, you can write 140 character quick tips just like Twitter. Second, the app singles out common phrases found in multiple reviews (just like the web site) to help you find out what’s really good or really bad about a place. Yelp’s got some serious crowd-sourcing power behind it and currently represents the best chance of making it easier to find good places to spend your money. With 2.0, now you can contribute from your phone. Weekly Hidden Gems Screamer Apps It’s one of the oldest jokes on the Internet. Get a person to get very focused on their computer screen, turn the sound way up and then scare the living crap out of them with a screaming face from The Exorcist. There were no less than three screamer apps released this week - Scary Puppy ($0.99), 3 2 1 Scream Lite (Free), Screamer ($0.99). Upon further inspection of the app store, there appear to be many of these apps released over the past several weeks. I don’t know how I missed these before or why it took so long for them to hit the App Store, but these are the new fart apps - nearly worthless gag apps that fulfill a single purpose. Here, it’s to scare the crap out of someone. I paid for Scary Puppy and was extremely unimpressed, but I’m sure there’s a great screamer app out there. Here’s one of the crueler (or funnier, depending on much of a jerk you are) examples of what can happen to someone using one the Prank Box (links to iTunes) screamer apps which try to get you to complete a task requiring intense focus: I’m absolutely dying to see the video of someone getting scared out of their wits by one of these apps and then tossing it at a wall, decimating the iPhone in the process. If you have tried any of these out, let us know in the comments what’s good and what’s bad. We need to know before this joke gets lame. And it will get lame. Biplane ($0.99) / Biplane Lite (Free) A 3D flying game that has great motion controls, wonderful sound and decent graphics. Fly around as a raccoon and try to destroy the enemy. Consider giving the free app a try. Ghost Sweep (Free) A decent, and free, minesweeper clone. Not the best, but you can’t argue with the price. Instapaper Pro v1.4 Update Rejected For Having iPhone Image

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

Just when you thought it was safe to submit an update to the App Store, there comes word from the developer of Instapaper, a popular, easy to use offline web page viewer for the iPhone and iPod touch, that an update to his application has been rejected because of “trademark infringement” for the use of the mini-iPhone icon pictured in the image above. On his blog, Marco writes that he submitted his update to Instapaper Pro and 9 days later he was notified that Apple would not be publishing his update unless he removed or changed the icon in question. Instead of trying to fight the issue with Apple, he says that he plans to design a different icon and then resubmit the update, hoping it gets approved. What is your opinion about this latest App Store rejection? Do you think Apple has a valid reason for not approving this update, or do you think this is yet another example of them demonstrating the lawlessness that is the App Store approval process? Manage Your Hulu Account With My Hulu

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

My Hulu may not be the official Hulu application you were hoping for, but at least it offers iPhone and iPod touch users some Hulu manipulating abilities. My Hulu is a brand new application just released today that allows you to basically do everything that you can normally do on Hulu.com , except watch videos.  With My Hulu you can search videos, manage your queue, access your friends page, and much more.  You can even set up a Hulu.com account directly from the application itself.  It pretty much functions like any of those Netflix applications available at the App Store.  Another nifty feature is the ability to disable video thumbnails, which will allow pages to load faster for users with a slow internet connection. It’s worth noting that the application requires the ability to access the internet, so iPod touch users will need to find a Wi-Fi connection to use the application. My Hulu is available immediately at the App Store for $1.99.  If you decide to give it a try, tell us what you think because there aren’t any reviews yet available at the App Store to base our opinions on. New Updates

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

If you’ve got just about every page on your device filled with apps like I do, this was a good week for updates. Most notably for me was the constantly updated Pocket God and the long awaited update for Zombieville USA. I probably play these two apps more than any other on my phone at the moment. Although Pocket God isn’t technically a game, but close enough. A few other goodies this week popped up for Tap Tap Revenge 2, Watchmen: Justice is Coming (which still isn’t very good), Wolfenstein 3D Classic, and iDracula. (just to name a few) As I said, Pocket God and Zombieville USA are the two I was eagerly waiting for and they both didn’t disappoint. First let’s get into Pocket God and the amazing job those guys over at Bolt Creative have done with this little app that has continued to stay in the top 25 for months now. Whether you are a fan of this app or not, the reason it’s so popular is because of the weekly updates. So far they are the only development team I know of that strives to get a new update out on a weekly basis. Sometimes that week can go a little long, but for the most part every week this app has something new added to it. Each time it just gets better and better and for only $.99, what more could you ask for? Anyway, back to this week’s update…we finally have the ability to name each one of the islanders and they’ve also added a stats page to keep track of how many times you decide to torture each one and in which way you decide to do it. This really helps add a lot more replay value to the app instead of what I usually use it for, which is killing about five minutes or so. Easily worth the money if you haven’t picked it up yet. I’ve had the app since the launch of it and it’s exciting to see just how far it’s come since then. Up next is their Star Wars Trilogy of sorts appropriately named: A New Home, The Tyrannosaurus Strikes Back, and Return of the Pygmy…awesome! What more is there to say? Get it now because once this is released, the price is going to go up. To be honest I’m surprised it’s taken them this long to finally increase the price for this. The last update (and according to their site this will be the final “polish” on the game) is the Zombieville USA update that I grabbed last night. A bunch of new stuff has been added to this one including the ability to play your own music (awesome), improvements to performance and graphics (graphics look much better, still some lag though), the app respects the mute button (cool I guess?), and you can finally purchase ammo once you’ve acquired all of the guns in the game (it’s about time!). The ammo costs $1600 which is definitely steep, but once you get toward level twenty you’re money is maxed out anyways so it’s not really that big of a deal. At least they finally added this feature. My current score is level 30 with 1032 zombies killed. Can’t wait to see how far I can get this time. Side note: Anyone got a better score? Let me know so I have a challenge to beat. It’s nice to see a badge next to the app store icon. It’s like opening a bunch of presents. Which ones are getting updated, what are they updating this time? The worst is when it’s for apps you don’t even use anymore, but you still update them don’t you? Yeah, I do it to. I just went through and got rid of a bunch of apps I don’t use anymore, but I still held on to a few, even if I haven’t opened them in weeks. It’s my curse, what can I say… App Pick of the Week So for this week I have a ridiculously stupid, yet fun, app called Smack Me! Ever play one of those Bop It games where it tells you to hit a button, twist a knob, or shake the thing? Well, if so that’s basically what this game is. You basically torture a robot as it tells you to smack it (you tap the screen), shake it (obviously just shake your device), and pinch me (pinch your fingers on the screen). It gets faster and more difficult the higher levels you go and each one ends with a robotic voice at the end, which is always funny. There’s a lite version for free and the main version which costs only $.99. If anything, try out the lite version for a few minutes of robot awesomeness. Retro Game of the Week So two weeks running and nobody has figured out what this game is…sweet. So here it is again. Tell me what the game is called and the system it was on. Good luck and I’ll see you next week… Related Posts Evolution of the FPS Apple Updates iTunes to v8.1.1 - Available Now New AirPort Extreme And Time Capsule Play Nice With iPhone

SlingPlayer Mobile Release Still In Question

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

Sling Media’s SlingPlayer Mobile has garnered a lot of hype for good reason, the application simply rocks. For those of you who are still unaware, SlingPlayer Mobile allows you to remotely access content from your Slingbox giving you the ability to control your home TV, watch TV on-the-go, and even manage your home DVR. We have been reporting about Sling Media’s SlingPlayer Mobile for the iPhone for months. When it was first shown at last year’s WWDC as a proof-of-concept, people couldn’t wait to get their hands on it. At Macworld in January 2009, Sling Media showed off a working alpha version of the application and announced that it would be ready by March. Sling Media was able to meet their self-imposed deadline and submitted SlingPlayer Mobile for the iPhone to the App Store on March 26th.  Ever since then, there have been no indications from Apple or Sling Media as to when the application would finally be available.  So what gives? We can tell you first hand that it isn’t because the application doesn’t work properly. A few members of our staff have been lucky enough to be able to use a private beta version of the application and let’s just say, they have been very impressed. So the problem definitely is not on Sling Media’s end. Of course we can only speculate as to why SlingPlayer Mobile for the iPhone hasn’t been released. Many other sites have been covering the long delayed application, coming up with their own conclusions, but up until this point we have avoided these rumors and conjecture. What’s with the change of heart you ask? Well, it comes down to our feelings of been there, done that. Our own application BargainBin had been stuck in App Store limbo for months without any word from Apple as to why and we called it being “ pocket rejected .” What happens is, instead of Apple dealing with the situation, they stand idly by, basically waiting for the application to disappear from everyone’s thoughts. It’s not just us either, Ars Technica even wrote a full length article about a few similar cases. So has SlingPlayer Mobile for the iPhone been pocket rejected? We hope not. It’s possible that Apple together with AT&T are simply trying to decide what to do with the application. Since it uses the iPhone’s 3G, Edge, and Wi-Fi connections to stream content, the application may eat up huge amounts of bandwidth, something AT&T obviously wouldn’t want. Just like everyone else, we are stuck waiting to see what the conclusion of this story will be, but don’t worry, we will keep you posted.
