Review: Gravity Well

Friday, April 24th, 2009

Overview Get the ball in the hole…only this time use gravity and the accelerometer to navigate the ball into the goal and complete the level. That’s basically it. As you advance to higher levels, they get harder and there are more obstacles in your way as you attempt to…well, get the ball into the hole. Gravity Well is a fun and addicting game little game that will no doubt drive you crazy, but in a good way. Features Not a whole lot of features on this one, but there really isn’t any need for them either so…The main feature here would be the soundtrack. There are over 17 tracks that have been custom created for this application by the award winning Humble Brothers and they can also be purchased in iTunes…so that’s pretty cool. Other than the innovative touch controls, which are also cool, a portion of the proceeds goes toward the BCSPCA, Heart & Stroke Foundation of BC & Yukon, and the Canadian Cancer Society. So you’re helping people by buying this app… bonus points on that one! Breakdown The Good: The soundtrack and gameplay are easily the app’s strongest elements. The music in a game like this can get really old, really fast. It’s nice to see more game applications implementing this type of feature where you not only get multiple tracks, but you’re able to get said tracks on iTunes as well. Definitely a cool addition to the game. The gameplay is surprisingly smooth and works quite well here. You basically just touch wherever you want the ball to go and it reacts to the gravity it takes to get there. So in other words, it’s like if you threw a ball toward something and then suddenly wanted it to go in another direction. The ball would need to expel the energy it already had first before switching directions. So the ball doesn’t go exactly where you touch once you get it moving. Still following me? Basically, it really feels like there is some gravitational force pulling at the ball when you play. Again, it works extremely well. The Bad The graphics…they’re not very good. Ever play any first generation game on either XBOX or Playstation and then compare that game to the current game that are now out there? The first generation game doesn’t really hold up, right? Well that’s how I felt about these graphics. They seem out-dated on a device that is capable of so much more. The reply value on this game isn’t really that high in my opinion. It’s a fun game, don’t get me wrong, but I doubt I’d ever go back and play it again after trying it out for a few hours. For the price of four bucks, I’m not sure it’s worth that much. The Verdict The game’s not bad. I wouldn’t put it on my “top games list,” (assuming I even had one) but I wouldn’t dismiss it either. If you like these type of games, I say pick it up. You’ll get plenty of enjoyment out of it. However, if you’re looking for something casual to play every once in a while…I’m not sure this is worth the price. Apple Apologizes For Approving Baby Shaker App

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

Earlier today we reported about the unfortunate approval then fortunate yanking of an app called Baby Shaker for the iPhone. It was an application in which the user had to shake a picture of a baby to get it to stop crying and until its eye’s had red X’s on them. Now, MacWorld is reporting that Apple issued a formal apology for approving the app in the first place. When contacted by MacWorld, Apple had the following to say: This application was deeply offensive and should not have been approved for distribution on the App Store. When we learned of this mistake, the app was removed immediately. We sincerely apologize for this mistake and thank our customers for bringing this to our attention. The developer, Sikalosoft , did not immediately return e-mails about their app and subsequently have taken down their web site in it’s entirety. iPhone Friendly Google Product Search Available

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

Have you ever stood in the aisle of a store and stared blankly at a product, trying to decide if it was priced reasonably or if it was the right product for you?  If so, you may be delighted to know that Google has announced that their Google Product Search is now iPhone friendly. The Google Product Search page is now nicely formatted for your iPhone, and it should help you find out everything you need to know about a certain product.  The new page is easy to use, simply go to Google.com and type in a product type.  The page then brings up the normal search results with news and various other listings, look for the link that says “Shopping results.” Make sure to look really close though, sometimes the shopping results link is near the middle or bottom of the page.  Click on the link and you will be given a whole bunch of products related to your search.  From there, you can view prices, reviews, ratings, and even technical specifications for any product.  The list can also be changed on the fly to sort from low to high, high to low, product ratings, and more. Of course there are other ways of going about finding product information, like using Amazon’s  Amazon Mobile application, but none of them are as easy to use and as convenient as a simple Google search. To further demonstrate how Google’s new Google Product Search feature works, here is one of Google’s engineers named Rob.  I must warn you, Rob doesn’t seem too comfortable in front of a camera, so just give him a break, alright? Metal Gear Solid Touch Is Finally Complete

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

Metal Gear Solid Touch has probably been discussed and dissected more than any other game available at the App Store, so we aren’t going to get into how the game is simply an above average on-rails shooter.  What we can get into, however, is the fact that the game is finally complete. Metal Gear Solid Touch was basically released unfinished, with Konami promising the final 8 stages as a free update at a later time.  That later time is now because Konami has released the final 8 stages of the game, bringing Metal Gear Solid Touch to a total of 20 stages.  Aside from adding missions, the update adds 20 new wallpapers to use however you please. Will this new update help entice some of you who were holding off from purchasing Metal Gear Solid Touch ?  And for you existing Metal Gear Solid Touch owners, will the update be enough to draw you back into Solid Snake’s crazy world? Metal Gear Solid Touch is available at the App Store for $7.99. Apple Q2 Financial Results

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

Now that Apple has announced their second quarter financial results, we are here to give you a quick rundown of what exactly took place. Apple posted a revenue of $8.16 billion and a net quarterly profit of $1.21 billion, that figure is up from the year-ago quarter figures of $7.51 billion and a net profit of $1.05 billion.  Worth noting is that these numbers represent the best March quarter revenue and earnings in Apple’s long history. Apple was able to sell 11.01 million iPods during the quarter, a 3 percent increase from the year-ago quarter.  iPhone sales reached 3.79 million, a 123 percent increase from the year-ago quarter. Overall, Apple seemed very pleased with their sales and they darn well should be. There was also a Q&A portion to the conference call, which shed some light on some of Apple’s other thoughts and happenings.  When asked if they were working on a way to make it easier for applications to be discovered at the App Store, they responded that they were working on a number of things, and  they specifically stated that they are expanding the App Store genres.  We’re not sure exactly how or when, but at least they are addressing the issue. Finally, when asked about maintaining iPhone exclusivity with AT&T, Apple simply responded that they consider AT&T to be a “very good partner.”  The have absolutely no plans to change carriers.  They did, however, basically confirm what Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg  stated early this month , saying they wanted the iPhone to be a global device and using CDMA wasn’t really an option.  Touché. Just to be clear, Apple really don’t rule out Verizon from that simple statement.  They were just making it clear that Verizon wasn’t and isn’t an option while they are using CDMA. That’s it for Q2, we will see you again for the Q3 results. Tired Of The Same Old Girls In Bikinis? Check Out Russian Brides Gallery

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

Are you sick and tired of looking at the same old girls in bikinis on your iPhone?  Do you need a little more variety?  If so, you might want to check out the brand new Russian Brides Gallery application now available at the App Store. Russian Brides Gallery gives you access to over 36,000 pictures of 100 percent real Russian and Ukrainian babes.  The categories include a top 100 list, blondes, brunettes, redheads, and you can even sort them by their Zodiac symbols.  I have no idea why you would want to sort them by a Zodiac symbol, but just go with it.  If you are tired of searching for the perfect babe, just take a gander at the random section. Like most other applications of this nature, you can also save any photo as your background or just add them to your photo library.  You may also rate photos in hopes of getting your favorite girl on the top 100 list.  One last odd and creepy feature worth noting is the ability to locate each girls hometown in Google Maps with the touch of a single button. Just as a heads up, Russian Brides Gallery requires an internet connection to view and download photos. Russian Brides Gallery is currently available at the App Store for free, but only for a limited time. Future iPhones To Benefit From New Bluetooth 3.0 Spec

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

Now that Apple has caved and decided to give us support for stereo Bluetooth, what will we have to beg for next?  It looks like Bluetooth 3.0.  Bluetooth SIG — the special interest group that oversees the development of Bluetooth standards and licensing — formally adopted Bluetooth 3.0. At the top of the short list of reasons why this new version should be highly anticipated is the fact that it’s 8 times faster than the current Bluetooth 2.1 standard which caps it’s speed at 3Mbps. The speed increase to 24Mbps is done in part by combining the power of Bluetooth with the power of WiFi. For example, when transferring files using Bluetooth 3.0, a temporary WiFi connection will be made between the two devices to give the transfer that extra speed boost. That WiFi connection will only exist for enough time so that the transfer can be completed and will be ended before it’s noticable to any other nearby device. For iPhone and iPod touch fans, this is exciting news. Progress on Bluetooth technology is important to anyone who uses their phone with a Bluetooth hands-free headset or would like to use their phone to quickly transfer contacts or files to another phone. Don’t expect Bluetooth 3.0 to start hitting devices soon though; the Bluetooth special interest group has said they don’t expect the new technology to be available to consumers for another 9 to 12 months - which is just in time for the 4th generation iPhone to be introduced! If you have the itch to better understand the more technical side of Bluetooth 3.0,  AppleInsider has a solid breakdown of the subject.
