Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

Something we don’t mention very often is alternate ways of syncing your iPhone with your computer. However there is a pretty nice option available for those looking to get a little more than what a regular iTunes sync can offer. The software is called The Missing Sync for iPhone 2.0 and is designed as a

Microsoft To Launch iPhone Rival On Verizon’s Network?

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

To add even more confusion to the already confusing world of iPhone related rumors, the Wall Street Journal is now reporting that Microsoft is in talks with Verizon to launch an iPhone killer on their network in 2010.  This report comes only one day after BusinessWeek reported that Apple was in talks with Verizon to bring two devices to their network, and only two days after USA Today reported Apple would be launching an iPhone on Verizon’s network in 2010. The Wall Street Journal reports that Microsoft and Verizon are only discussing the possible terms of the deal.  They say Microsoft is currently working on a new touch-screen device code-named “Pink,” and that even though they will be involved in the design process, a third-party is expected to actually build it.  The project is said to use Microsoft’s existing Windows Mobile operating system, but it will have added features that mirror Apple’s software. No further details are available at this point. It seems as if the iPhone rumors have officially gotten out of hand.  What’s your take on the situation? Amazon acquires iPhone ebook reader Stanza

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

Amazon has recently acquired Lexcycle, who are perhaps a little better know for their iPhone ebook app called Stanza. Honestly, I am not sure if this is good news or bad news. To begin with, it looks like we are not going to be seeing any changes, according to a posting on the Lexcycle website; “We

Apple to bring “lite” iPhone and tablet to Verizon soon?

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

BusinessWeek cites two sources reporting that Verizon might get an iPhone “lite” and a connected touchscreen Apple tablet as early as this summer. This sounds like the real thing this time, folks. We’ve heard talk like this for a long time, but BusinessWeek isn’t going to stick its neck out for rumors that aren’t at least

Amazon grabs developer of popular eBook app for iPhone

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

Online retailer Amazon.com has purchased the development firm behind the most popular eBook reader application for Apple’s iPhone in a bid to extend its reach of the digital book market beyond its Kindle device. The old saying “If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em” comes into play here. Lexcycle, makers of the Stanza application for the

Review: Milestone

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

Overview Milestone is a very simple app for logging the major events in a baby’s early development. It’s for parents, but not all parents. Primarily, Milestone is for parents who’d like to see how the development of their baby (or babies) compares to the average. Features You can add a baby’s name (or several) to the app and then open it up whenever the baby hits a major milestone in its development, like smiling, grasping, sitting up and eventually walking, and add that “milestone” to the timeline. You can very quickly add a developmental event when it happens, or you can manually change the date if the event already occurred, and then close the app and forget about it until the next event occurs. Rotate the iPhone horizontally and you can see your baby’s progress compared to the average age those events occur. It is important to note this app features no bells and whistles beyond what’s described above. It only fulfills a very specific need for a parent. It is not, for example, a baby journal or a baby notebook. And, yes, for this review I decided to name my imaginary baby Rocky Balboa. Don’t judge me. The Breakdown The Good It works as described above. If you have or are going to have several children the usefulness of this app improves because it gives you a simple way to compare the development of your various children. Nadya Suleman, for example, would probably benefit from this app the most. The Bad A baby journal app is an absolute must-have for every new parent. Unfortunately, that isn’t what Milestone is and I don’t know if that app exists yet. I’ve actually decided to hold off having kids until this app does exist. I’m kidding. Well, mostly. In all seriousness, the iPhone could easily be an amazing baby notebook. The App Store is in dire need of an app that could leverage all the tools the iPhone offers to track a baby’s early development. Not just scientifically, as is done in Milestone, but emotionally, aurally, visually and physically. How about audio of your baby’s first few words and a photo to attach to the memory? How about a foot print or hand print using the touchscreen to measure its size? The possibilities offered by the iPhone are truly astonishing for any parent or would-be parent. Unfortunately, there doesn’t appear to be an app for that. Milestone certainly isn’t that app. Milestone only does what it says it does: open the app up and mark when your baby hits a particular developmental milestone. I would’ve been super impressed with the ability to add your own events or the length or weight of a baby, but that’s not here. Developer Response I contacted the developer and asked about the limited feature set. Rita from Ventio Technologies got back to me. In response to my complaint about the inability to add your own events to the app, Rita said, “we have to be careful on how to separate milestone events and user-added events, because some of the events added by users are not considered as baby development milestones.” This reiterates the stated purpose of the app as simply a developmental milestone tracker. Rita also said adding photos is a priority. Conclusion If you really need a simple solution to compare your child’s development to the average or you have several children and want to compare them to each other, then spend your money on this app. If not, use a note taking app to keep a journal of your baby’s development and include whatever details you want. Alternatively, you could just send yourself an e-mail with the subject “Baby Development - Sat up first time” or “Baby Development - walked first time” and you’ve got a record of your baby’s development for all time. Apple Preparing Two Devices For Verizon Wireless?

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

Just yesterday we reported that Apple was in talks to bring the iPhone to Verizon sometime next year and just 24 hours later we’ve now got a new rumor hitting the net that’s sure to get the masses talking. BusinessWeek reports that Apple and Verizon Wireless are in talks to develop not one but two iPhone-like handhelds that allegedly could be unveiled as soon as this year. The first device being talked about is being described as a less powerful version of the current iPhone, possibly an iPhone nano. The second device is a bit more interesting in that it’s not a cell phone but a “Media Pad” that more or less looks to be a cross between an iPod touch and a tablet device. The article goes on to cite “two people familiar with the matter” as saying that Apple has already created prototypes of these devices. While these definately sound like exciting ideas, it’s important to remember that this is all nothing more than rumor at this point. Nevertheless, given the pace at which Apple and Verizon information has been sprouting up recently, you’ve got to believe that at a minimum, there is some talking going on behind closed doors. QuickVoice Pro Recorder - Record And Send Voice Messages, Includes Bonus Software

Monday, April 27th, 2009

There are currently tons of voice recording applications available at the App Store, so it can be extremely difficult to find the one that best suits your specific needs.  Since we can’t make the decision for you, the best we can do is offer up some intriguing options and today we came across one very intriguing option. QuickVoice Pro Recorder contains the same laundry list of features of its free little brother QuickVoice Recorder , including the ability to record, stop, and save at the touch of a single button, adjust recording qualities, flip-mode for the addition of a microphone for iPod touch users, and even the ability to email your recordings, but the big difference between the two applications is the amount of data you can send.   QuickVoice Recorder offers the ability to send up to 1MB of voice recordings via email.   QuickVoice Pro Recorder on the other hand, allows you to send up to 20MB of voice recordings via email. What Movie Is This From? - New Movie Quote Trivia Game

Monday, April 27th, 2009

If you are sick and tired of the same old stale movie trivia games available at the App Store,  What Movie Is This From just may be the cure for what ails you. What Movie Is This From, or the much easier to type WMITF , is an asynchronous movie trivia game.  The game is unique because not only is it a asynchronous, which basically means movie quotes are posted at varying times throughout the day, but it also offers truly competitive gameplay.  Instead of giving multiple choice answers for a single movie quote, you are required to type the answer in freehand, making it overly important for you to type quickly and accurately.   WMITF then gives you points based on the speed of your answer, and allows you to compare your score against each and every player around the world. The asynchronous gameplay can be absolutely addicting.  Instead of firing up the game and playing instantly, a timer indicates when the next quote will appear.  You can sit there and wait if you have the time, or you can plan accordingly and come back to the game when the quote is released.  This allows players who don’t have a ridiculous amount of free time to just pop in and play whenever they feel like it. What Movie Is This From is currently available for free at the App Store.  Once the user base hits about 2,000, the price will be raised to $.99.  According to the developer, the user base is well over half way there so don’t wait too long.
