Apple Releases iPhone OS 3.0 Beta 2

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

Apple has just released the second version of the iPhone 3.0 beta software which will immediately give developers the ability to start building applications that rely on push notifications, among a couple other new items. AppleInsider is reporting that developers were given detailed information on how to build in-app purchasing into their existing or new applications as well.  This information will reportedly appear in the App Store Kit reference guide. Apple also informed developers of their plans to open the live testing service to support the new features during the beta test program, but it will only be limited to a select few developers to begin with.  More developers will be allowed to utilize the service as time passes. There are probably plenty more interesting tidbits hidden inside beta 2, but we will just have to wait for them to start surfacing.  In the meantime, developers can head over to  developer.apple.com to begin downloading the latest build. Macworld Expo 2010 Moved To February

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

IDG World Expo has announced that in response to the Mac community of exhibitors, attendees, media, and fans alike,  Macworld 2010 will take place from February 9th through the 13th instead of in early January. This is IDG’s way of ushering in a new era for Macworld since 2009 was Apple’s last year of participation: “For 25 years, Macworld has been the pre-eminent event focused solely on the Apple products ecosystem, and with the recent evolution of the show we have been able to fully engage the Macworld community for input on the 2010 event. As we began the planning process, attendees and exhibitors made it clear that February in San Francisco was the time and location that worked best, so we listened. We firmly believe that these new dates will better meet the needs of everyone participating in Macworld, and are pleased to have been able this respond to this request from the community. The journey toward a new era for Macworld has begun and we are more excited about this ride than ever before,” said Mary Dolaher, chief executive officer of IDG World Expo, the owner of Macworld. Macworld 2010 will also feature another change, the addition of a Saturday to the expo portion of the event.  The expo floor will be open from Thursday, February 11th through Saturday, February 13th to allow more flexible times and weekend access.  Because of this, the conference sessions will take place from Tuesday, February 9th through Saturday, February 13th. Macworld 2010 may suffer a bit without the giant media magnet that is Apple, but these events are supposed to be more than just Apple’s outlet for announcing new products.  Are any of you regular attendees or exhibitors excited about the new format? Skype for iPhone released; details surfacing

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

Apple’s about finished rolling out Skype for iPhone, and now US residents can go download the VoIP app for themselves. Quick test posted by several sites show that voice quality is quite good - definitely on par or better than actual 3G calling over AT&T’s network - and connects rather quickly. It’s unfortunate that 2.2.1 doesn’t

Royal Bank of Canada thinks next version of iPhone won’t boost sales momentum

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

The Royal Bank of Canada is maintaining its bearish near-term outlook on shares of Apple, claiming that although consumer interest in a new version of the iPhone remains healthy, sales of the new device are unlikely to provide the company with the same boost seen during the transition from the original iPhone to the iPhone

Sony Pictures Television Announces New Game Titles

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

Sony Pictures Television recently announced that they intend to bring some new titles to their 2009 iPhone lineup that may excite quite a few old school gamers out there. The new titles include Ghostbusters, Q*Bert, Top Agent, and Jeopardy.  Jeopardy isn’t a big surprise, as they already have made Wheel of Fortune for the iPhone, but Ghostbusters is an unexpected announcement. Ghostbusters, for many, has a huge nostalgia factor deeply ingrained in it, so it shouldn’t be too difficult to sell fans of the films on this game.  Ghostbusters has already been announced for the “big three” consoles, but this is the first time an iPhone version has been mentioned, and due to that fact, little is known about it.  The game’s story, at least for the console versions, is being written by Dan Ackroyd and Harold Ramis, the writers of the original films.  The game will include most of the original cast including my favorite funny man Bill Murray.  Dan Ackroyd has said that the game will basically be considered Ghostbusters 3. All that we know at this point is that the game will take place right after the events of Ghostbusters 2 and will involve ghost catching in New York while including some of your favorite original villains.  The game is set to arrive at the App Store in mid-June. They are also working on a remake of the popular arcade classic Q*Bert.  Some of you may recall that we reported a while back about another company creating their own version of this classic, aptly titled CuBert.  Well, once we heard the news of an official remake we decided to check the App Store to see if CuBert still exists.  It turns out that Sony Pictures Television had asked LagMac , the developers of CuBert, to modify their title to less resemble the arcade classic.  LagMac is currently still working on the modifications. Sony’s Q*Bert will feature crisp graphics, new maps (50 in total), and new animations. Top Agent is a game based on James Bond: 007, and all we know about it is that it will have multi-player action that will allow you to create your own agent to fight against your opponents, basically a Bond MMO.  This title is said to arrive in August. Which of these titles are you most excited about?  I personally can not wait to try my hand at taking down the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man in Ghostbusters.
