iPhone ownership prices to be driven down by competition soon, according to analysis

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

Tough macroeconomic conditions are causing wireless carriers like Sprint and T-Mobile to become more aggressive with pricing of their monthly service plans, a move which could ultimately help drive down the cost of owning an iPhone. Yes, we’ve said this in a few others reports recently, but it could really happen in the very near

How iPhone app management in iTunes should be, but sadly its just a concept.

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

A new concept video has surfaced showing off what appears to be a much nicer way to manage your iPhone apps within iTunes. Moving and rearranging your apps directly on your iPhone is likely manageable for most people, however there are plenty of us who often have way more than we should, and whatever your

Rinspeed To Demo iPhone-Controlled Car

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

We have already seen an eco-friendly car manufacturer throw a free iPhone in with the purchase of a vehicle, and now a new concept car will be showcased next week at the Geneva Motor Show that will actually use the iPhone to control multiple car features. The concept vehicle was created by Rinspeed , a Swedish automotive company that specializes in restoring classic vehicles and modifying modern ones. Every year Rinspeed’s founder, Frank Rinderknecht, unveils a new concept car for the Geneva Motor Show. This year’s concept car is called the iChange. The iChange introduces a whole new aerodynamic concept where the body of the vehicle actually changes shape to accommodate multiple passengers. The three-seat vehicle also adapts to passenger weight by changing power output accordingly to make the vehicle as efficient as possible. It is powered by an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery. All of that is great but the real prize is that the iChange uses an iPhone to run some of its most basic operations. Instead of a key, the iPhone acts as an ignition with a giant “start” button. The iPhone also controls many other simple features instead of using normal dashboard controls such as lights and the electronic roof section. Imagine how bad it feels when you lose your car keys and now multiply that by one-hundred because your car keys are your iPhone as well. Ouch. Rinspeed’s concept vehicles rarely are mass produced so don’t expect to see one of these rolling down the streets of your neighborhood anytime soon. [via Wired ]

AT&T CEO announces plans to expand and improve 3G network

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

Speaking at Mobile World Congress, AT&T Mobility CEO Ralph de la Vega revealed the company’s plans to extend 3G coverage to more cities in the US, improve existing coverage, and incrementally ramp up data speeds to retain the title of the fastest American 3G network. In an interview conducted at the event, de la Vega defended

AT&T Mobility CEO Talks About 3G Coverage

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

We have even more information coming out of this year’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Engadget was able to have a nice chat with AT&T Mobility CEO Ralph de la Vega about how they plan to expand their network coverage, among other topics. AT&T now has 3G service in more than 350 cities. The problem has been that the coverage is still fairly spotty, but they are currently working on a frequency band transition that should remedy some of the problems. AT&T intends on transitioning from 1900MHz to 850MHz in some major cities while finishing the transition in San Francisco and parts of New York. The lower frequency 850MHz spectrum has been growing in popularity because it provides better coverage with fewer towers. The lower frequency is also more able to penetrate through objects such as walls. AT&T has also discussed using the 700MHz band to bring added coverage to rural areas. Ralph de la Vega also talked about AT&T’s future plans on upgrading the speeds of their 3G network over the next year and a half. They think this strategy will give them an advantage over other companies like Verizon who are scrambling to get LTE implemented as quickly as possible. AT&T feels that they have more time to transition to LTE because of their large 3G network. Engadget was not able to get much information out of de la Vega concerning Apple’s iPhone. He did, however, admit to certain phones having more dropped calls than others but wouldn’t specify where the iPhone would place statistically. He did say that they are constantly working with Apple to improve consistency: “we communicate with Apple and say, you know, if we tweak this it would work better, so they’ve been very good about working with us and making sure that as we look at things to do the drop calls there, they’re going to implement it.” When asked about new iPhone models coming out this year as well as other iPhone related information de la Vega simply said that he wouldn’t answer for Apple. To finish off the interview, Engadget asked what we can expect from AT&T this year: “You can expect AT&T to continue to deliver some great, cool, innovative devices. You’re gonna expect us to continue to improve and expand our 3G network, and you’re gonna continue to see us deliver great value to customers at a time when the economy is asking our customers, or is driving our customers to seek really good values.” Hopefully by “great value” Ralph de la Vega means cheaper service plans including cheaper data prices. AT&T should be making at least a few iPhone customers a little happier this year with better 3G coverage in some markets.

Happy 54th Birthday Steven P. Jobs!

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

Steven Paul Jobs was born February 24th, 1955. He has been out of sight for the past few months attempting to make a healthy recovery from his illness and eventually return to Apple, the company he co-founded with longtime friend Steve Wozniak. We wish him nothing but good health, and from all of us at Apple iPhone Apps, happy 54th Steve! Sorry we didn’t get you anything but what do you purchase for a man who is worth billions of dollars and has major shares in giant corporations? How about we just keep doing our jobs and inform people about how great the iPhone is? You just can’t put a price on that.

How To Change Your Boot Image

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

Now I know we all leave our phones on 24/7, but for those users that actually turn their phones off and would like a custom boot screen when they start it back up, here is a walk through on how to customize this image. Up until lately, if we wanted to change the boot logo, we were forced to re-jailbreak or restore our firmware. Now we can do it during the commercial break over your wireless connection.   This How To is only for jailbroken iPhones. 1. Install LogoMe which can be found in the system section in Cydia     2. Next we are going to tap on the LogoMe app and when it opens, tap start.   3. We will have to select the image you would like to use. There are a few options for selecting this image and I will cover each one for you. The image size for these images should be 320×480.     3a. The first option for selecting the image for your custom boot screen is the Image Picker. This will just take you to your camera roll and photo library to chose an image already on your phone. Next you will be asked to preview the image or flash your phone. Tap flash to install the boot image.     3b. The second option for selecting an image is to link to a photo online which the program will download to the phone. Tap Download image and enter the address of the image then press ok. You will be asked again to preview or flash. Tap flash to confirm your election. I have uploaded some boot screens I have found. The web addresses are listed at the end of the article. For this example, I have used the image at http://img25.imageshack.us/img25/4461/boot5tq9.png.     3c. The third option is to restore the original image that came with the phone. This is if you are tired of your custom boot image and want a regular boring image like everyone else. This will just ask to preview or flash. Tap flash and it will be restored to the original.     You have now updated your boot image to something customized to express your individuality. I have included a link to ispazio’s boot logo library. The image is more for me than anyone else, but I like to know that I have designed every aspect of my iPhone experience. http://www.spaziocellulare.com/ispazio/en/download-custom-boot-images-for-pwnage-tool-and-winpwn/
